#1 Steering wheels

Post by rswift » Sun May 08, 2016 8:10 pm

So I'm celebrating an MOT pass on Friday, and already stuck 200 miles on the old girl over the weekend.

One thing that has become apparent (especially after seeing the MOT tester roll out of the car), is that a smaller steering wheel might be in order, mainly for comfort.

I have the original 16" very thin Mota-Lita (!) one, it's not great with cracks and odd splinter bits beginning to appear, I was going to get it re-furbished, but whilst googling for information for that, I saw that a few people had replaced them for 15"or 14" ones.

So any thoughts re changing to a smaller diameter ? Was wood standard in the car ?, (1970 2+2) or did some have leather, and were any different sizes available as factory options.

My car (US) spec has power steering. I'm not hung up on total originality but I would like to keep everything reasonably authentic.

I have a 15" on one of my cars and original 16" on the other 2.

I prefer the 16" wheels.

All 6 cylinder cars had woodrim wheels . If you are having difficulty getting your knee under the wheel , then with PAS a smaller wheel would not be a problem . However, have you already used up the height adjustment given by slackening the bolt securing the column to the bracket at the base of the dash and lifting the wheel and column as far as you can go ? ( A lot of people don't realise that this adjustment is available )

Thank you....no I didn't know about this adjustment, I'll go and look. I had seen the link re the refurbishment, my wheel isn't as bad as that. My plan was to refurb the old one anyway (I'm a double bass player), my repairer is used to working in wood with strange shapes ... so he's happy with doing the new wood.

It doesn't exist on your 1970. Like Chris I was going to suggest it as a first option, but saw you had a Series 2. Not exactly sure whether S1.5 had the same issue but by 1970 they were definitely reach but not rake adjustable. Chris is right about a smaller wheel being fine on a power steering car. It can even be preferable to firm up the steering feel, depending on preference.
