My series 1.5 broke down; and I fixed it with a paperclip! McGyver moment!
The retaining clip on the top of the throttle rod fell off; no throttle.

Well done! My first thought was "maybe I should put a couple of retainer clips in my spare parts bin for trips". But on second thought a few paper clips might be more useful?

You can almost always use your shoe strings to drive home, connect them to the throttle mech in a apprpriate way and drive home on "hand-gas".

I did twice yet !

Brilliant, but will this increase the price of paperclips?
You want them for an E Type? That'll be double the usual price sir!

Years ago we had a Mk2 Ford Escort, whilst driving from Plymouth to Glasgow, in torrential rain, the rubber plug that held the two halves of the wiper control rods sheared. An RAC patrolman was able to get some string through both ends, however, he couldn't tie a knot and get any tension, due to the location of the connection, high up behind the dash. My then wife drove for about 4hrs, in very heavy rain, with me sat in the passenger seat, holding both ends of the string and moving my arm backwards and forwards in order to maintain the tension and allow the wipers to work. The next morning I bought the rubber plug, cost around 50p and took 30 secs to fit, that was a trip I don't want to repeat.

I had the same problem and used an alligator clip from my spares kit to hold it in place.

Excellent job! E type paper clips.... they will be expensive. Anyway our cars don't break down...they just have a rest.
