Car is nearly fully sorted, I have completed a full service and on first run back flushed the coolant and refilled with fresh anti freeze / inhibitor, engine sounds sweet and then stopped! PROBLEM loose wire (live feed no.2 on SU) came off and shorted out. On removal of fuel pump it looked pretty ropey and points were playing up so I decided to refurbish, It literally fell to bits so I have put in a similar rated pump from new Zealand, solid state. NO POWER TO PUMP.
Now I have a few electrical diagrams but the only problem I could find was behind the dash near the right hand side of the fuse box is a black and white wire which is cotton braided and was not connected. None of the electrical diagrams show this colour wire. Wire is as I said on the right hand side about two thirds of the way back. If anyone with a ser 3 could have a peek at theirs I would be grateful. No inline fuse fitted as per the norm on a series 3. Slightly disheartening but I could always run a new lead from the ignition to the pump. Will let you know how new pump performs, on a hot wired run it was fine and had the bonus of being under half the price of a new SU pump and is solid state.
Thanks Jon
ps hopefully last problem and be back on road soon
