Hi Guys,

My 1962 FHC fuel gauge only reads half full or half empty depending and anything in between on the drivers mood.... This is not so helpful and i suspect the sender is not the original unit as it has only 2 connections for the gauge and i have three wires there. I did already try to adjust the float by bending the steel wire it is connected to but no noticeable improvement.

Could somebody please provide an template how to bend the steel wire of the senders float or share experience of a supplier who could supply a reasonable working sender unit. I do know and do not expect it to be very accurate but some indication of the amount of fuel is quite useful. Even with a spare 10 ltr's of fuel as this does not take you very far the engine has a strong preference for 98 octane which is not easy to come by.

Lets hope somebody can assist improving this situation.

I would replace the sender. SNG Barratt sell them for about £50. Problem solved and no bending required.

Anne, 3 wires at the sender and 2 at the gauge is normal.
You have one wire that goes to the low-fuel light. Check the wiring diagram for better illustration.
It could simply be that you are mixing up the connections.

At the sender black is ground and connect to a tab on one of the fixing bolts. Green with black stripe is the level sensor and goes to the gauge. White with green stripe is the low fuel light.

If unsure then connect up away from the tank and let the float drop. Gauge should be on E and the orange pilot should be on. You can test the pilot circuit by grounding the white green wire where upon the low fuel pilot should light. Do not ground the green black lead for more than a second or two though to test the gauge. Even full the sender has a resistance. Grounding the green black will make the gauge race to full and beyond!

If the wires are the wrong way around the gauge will probably show full and the pilot will be off....
