#1 1972 S3 headlight issue

Post by ASHMADDOX » Mon Jul 25, 2016 12:26 pm

Hi All ...

trying to do some cost effective repairs on my V12 for once ! i.e myself doing it !

headlight issue ...if anyone can suggest what to try next or even perhaps some wire colour codings to check !

so issue ....

I have side lights but no head lights from the central dashboard switches and cannot turn on full beam either

i can though flash full beam from the steering column stalk/control....

does anyone have any thoughts that could save me ?

I have so far tracked the power through the fuse box ( all goo ) and out to the rear of the main sidelight and main lights switches - current is also flowing out of the switches ....... so i am guessing / assuming / hoping that the issue is somewhere from their to the front bonnet ... i have not checked both bulbs each side for main as thought probability of both dip filaments and not both full beam was less than anything else ......

is there a relay perhaps between the dash switches and the front headlights that could have blown/broken? wouldn't that affect all lights though not just the dip beam issue i am having ?!?

any help on checks i can do or idea gladly received as i have hit a bit of a brick wall on my diagnosis !!

thanks in advance

P.S its originally a US car if that makes any difference for diagnosis ?

No relays involved but two fuses which you say you have checked (both?). First thing to do is disconnect the big plug connecting the loom to the bonnet and using a test meter or lamp to check you are getting voltage on the various pins - specifically 2 and 3 for high and low beam respectively:
