#1 Towing an E-Type

Post by Herzeg » Tue Aug 30, 2016 10:05 pm

Evening all

Anyone had any experience of long distance towing of an E-Type? I've seen the little triangle style bars that attach to a tow bar, usually behind motorhomes. There's also the type people like the AA used to use where it lifts the front onto some sort of dolly.

We travel about 1200 miles on holiday each summer and it would be nice to take the Jag along but the driving would be a chore as it's all motorway. I thought it might be an idea to tuck the jag in behind and tow it there for holiday use.

Anyone tried it?

Hi John....do you have a LSD...if so you need to take this into consederation......there has need lots of talk about it.....although ok for a very short recovery i dont know the effects of long distance...also consider the rear end clearance and the strain in the center of the car...personslly wouldnt do it.......and check your insurance

I'm sure as a last resort someone on here could drive it there for you, stay overnight in a 5 star hotel and then 1st class flight home. Repeat for the return journey .

On a serious note, short of an actual trailer, I would be reluctant to tow it any great distance.

I know most recovery companies won't tow old cars. Certainly the RAC won't. E types have no convenient or safe tow point either. Agree with all the others.....don't. Trailer or drive. Happy to drive it for you so long as I get 5 star hotel and business class home

Hold on Julian, you are debasing this. Simon expected first class home, now you say business class. The next thing that'll happen is a certain other Simon (SEJohnson95) will offer to drive it and PAY for his own Travelodge and return flight

Thanks for the comments.

I love the transporter idea, that would be soooo cool  :swerve: - trouble is my wife would probably fill it and leave no room for the car.
As for the 5-star hotel and first class flights - dream on, that's my job.

John,

On a more serious note, I would recommend a flat bed trailer. I towed my E home across half the country without any issues, about 1500 miles. I did wrap it up pretty well though.
