#1 S2 rear brakes

Hi all
I have recently changed the Pistons in the rear callipers of my 1970 S2 etype (together with seals and dust covers). I bought stainless steel ones from SC parts and the pistons have a different size grove in than the original ones and a different dust cover than the original ones. They fit ok, but are not a rugged/sturdy as the originals. Just wondered if anyone had come across this before?

Tony,

Have you got a picture showing the seals and how they fit on the caliper castings and pistons? There are a few variations, and there is also chance that you have a pair of saloon or XJ calipers which are different from the E in the way the seals are arranged.

Tony, I had exactly what Andrew pointed out, XJ calipers, look very similar but different pistons and seals.

On my Saloon I had one original and one XJ. I found a pair of SII XJ calipers, had them plated and fitted new seals and SS pistons as this seemed to be the best dust seal arrangement. All of the handbrake parts fitted to the later calipers withotu any modification, but I did have to remove some material between the lugs as my diff had a rib which interfered with the mounting. My pistons were from John Farrel, at the time he had a section of his website which showed the differences between the different piston lips.

If you do go with later calipers, check that they actually fit before you start painting, plating or rebuilding.

Andrew I will post a picture tomorrow.
The callipers are all built and the actual Pistons fit fine, it's just the dust seals don't seem to be good fit in the calliper housing, they are however fitted and when pressured they work fine. The dust seals onto the piston are fine also
