#1 XJ6 series 3 engine parts compatability?

Post by 288gto » Sat Oct 08, 2016 12:36 pm

I'm in the process of stripping the head off a complete XJ6 series 3 engine I managed to acquire. As I have the complete engine my question is, are there any other components worth saving that are compatible with the 4.2 E type engine. I have been told the oil filter housing with the oil cooler are a useful upgrade. I am reluctant to get rid of the rest of the engine but as E type parts are slowly taking over the house, my wife has started to make " comments ". :lol: :seeingstars:

All advice ( ref the engine , not my marriage ) appreciated .

Simon

The fuel injection head is a bit chunkier and can be modified to fit the earlier block.

It has larger inlet valves.

I fancy one if you want to sell yours.

Thanks James, that's the very reason I bought the whole engine in the first place, just for the head that will be going onto the original engine that I am rebuilding. I was just wondering if any other bits would be worth stripping off it before it goes for scrap. I am unfortunately a bit of a hoarder so it seems a shame. As far as I can see, it is only the actual block itself that is different . The engine has only done 85k miles and was running perfectly when removed.

Distributor/amplifier; stronger rods; lighter/stronger solid skirt pistons (8.75:1 CR); cams, cam oil feed if you use spin-on filter block; crank damper & pointer; crank if nitrided (circa 82 onwards?);

Peter, you are a star, that's exactly the information I was after. It's a 1985 engine so the crankshaft should be nitrided. The timing chain cover has the larger impeller pump rebate as well by the looks of it. I'm going to take the crank out tomorrow so it will be interesting to see what condition the bearings are in. The sump is now off and I notice the oil pipe(s) to the pump seem to be a larger diameter too.

The larger pump is a reason for using an S3 engine but not swapping or keeping parts.

The timing cover is machined with the block and will probably not be perfectly flush with an earlier block deck.

The timing cover exit port is also larger and will empty coolant into the sump on an earlier block.

The deeper pump needs spindle and pulley mods to fit behind a picture frame.

For all these reasons the cover has most value attached to the S3 block, to help make such a block more saleable.

Thanks again Peter, the engine is now stripped, labelled and on shelves. Having dismantled the E type engine already it has been interesting to note the subtle differences. One thing I did notice is that the timing marks on the crankshaft damper are in a different position to correspond with the repositioned timing pointer. The crankshaft is in excellent condition so that was a bonus.
To think that the 1985 engine that I pulled apart has changed very little since 1949 is a testament to its original design.
All in all quite a therapeutic weekend.
