#1 Hazard Warning Lights

Post by skiday » Wed Mar 17, 2010 4:58 pm

Hi

Has anyone fitted Hazard warning lights? I have a S1? 2+2 and think this would be a worthwhile upgrade if the control could be reasonably discreet.

Yes, a lot of American cars had them as standard as did all S2 cars AFAIK. The circuit is in the later wiring diagrams and I imagine Autosparks or the like can supply the additional loom. Be warned, however, that Hazards can be a b*gger for interfering with the normal operation of the indicators. You need to ensure in particular that all earths are securely connected

U.S.-spec cars got them for the 1966 model year. For the Series One E-Type, Jaguar was clearly not prepared for this and the switch/indicator lamp assembly consisted of a bracket mounted to the bottom edge of the driver's-side instrument panel. Personally, I think it looks like hell, the location is terrible, and I will do something a little more discreet on my current '66 FHC.

When I replaced all the wiring in my '65 FHC, the dash harness contained the necessary wiring for the flashers (I didn't retrofit them), so it is possible that all Series One LHD harnesses have this.

Planning on getting E-Type No. 3 as soon as possible....

Thanks for the info. I think that, given what you say, that I'll perhaps wait until I've got everything electrical working before I go tempting fate by trying to upgrade.

I have a S1 1/2 2+2

Thanks

Building your own is probably more trouble than it is worth but if you do want to all you need is a flasher unit, switch, wires and connectors - no electronics involved. If you don't want to go with the original style Jaguar unit you could always buy something like this (60 euros): http://tinyurl.com/6eefexp

SNG sell the original style one for ?92: http://tinyurl.com/cbvr23

The relay is a standard car hazard flasher unit available from any motor factor or scrap yard. Suggest you buy the ?12.99 kit as it includes everything you need.

From memory of my 66 2+2 harness, the unit alone would probably not work unless it was a post-66 LHD harness with the requisite under-dash wiring and connections for the hazard pigtail bullets. I *think* there's more to it than piggy-backing spare sockets in double bullet connectors. But as far as appearances go, it's certainly correct, if not elegant. There should be two small holes in the lower edge of the dash panel on relevant cars, which use clip-on thread receivers to accept self-tappers from underneath, through the hazard panel flange.

Hopefully it contains the correct high-load flasher unit behind the panel but I can't see it. The unit is rated differently to a normal flasher as all four bulbs operate simultaneously.

I am trying to connect the hazard light wiring on my S1 2+2 american import, and could read that the big brown wire with the inline fuse (about twice the thickness of the other wires) needs to be connected to a feed. At least that's what I think I saw on those nice period inserts by Heuer.
Can anyone confirm what colour wire that would be?
I checked on the wiring diagrams available on this forum, and apart from some errors in the one coloured by Bill Molloy for the turn signal switch and how these wiresy are connected, I think I would need to connect it to the "light brown" wire part of the indicator stalk wiring which goes to the brown side of fuse 3.
Which would mean that I just replace the existing single connector with a double bullet connectors and piggy-back on it?
If so, fair enough, but what does that thick purple wire high up in the picture do then? Cannot find it back on any wiring diagram related to the indicator or hazard switch.
