Wiper Switch 2 speed series 1

Hi everyone. I have the six pole wiper switch and when testing the switch I am finding that when switched on to slow or fast speed other poles on the switch are shorting to the earth connection (pole 2).

Am I being completely dumb or is there something wrong internally? I've taken it to bits and can't see anything obvious
