How do I fix a ripped out stud on the clutch slave ?
Inwanted to fit the eye plate and the spring today, but the nut took the bolt out together with swarf and the thread...
If there is an oversize bolt for the inside and a standard size for the outside this would be a way to go.
Lucky me it is the lower bolt, I may be able to fix it from the pit not having to remove the engine. Oh joy.
And the water pump drips slowly. Oh nice. Maybe better to buy a new one. I was so proud when I overhauled it 2 years ago...

The water pump seal may improve once run and up to pressure - don't worry about a few spots of rust on sealing surfaces after 2 years unused. If it still doesn't seal after fifty miles then worry about it. You'll be happy to do the repair because by then you will have figured out how to get it running.
The slave uses 2 studs not bolts. Stripped threads in alloy and a positive location of the slave are the main reasons not to use a bolt. You probably have a helicoil to do but be careful. The bell is not super-thick and you should still use a stud.

Oh I meant studs, of course. They have a coarse and a fine side. And I was just undoing the nut when the stud fell out.
Maybe I should convert the stripped one to metric, going for the next size.
I think it is pretty academic to look out for an imperial-coarse threaded helicoil in this country....while a set of coarse metric cutters is just in my box.
If the cylinder eye size does not match I could then drill- open it using a metric drill and widening it just a bit up.
Which stud size is it ? The nut is one size above 1/2, I think 9/16 is it ?

If the stud 'fell out' hust by undoing the nut how could it be tightened correctly when the cylinder was fitted?
You will need to measure your own parts for two reasons: 1) In case it may already not be standard if someone previously damaged it, or 2) if you are going to make it metric you will need to choose your own 'bastard' thread dianeter and pitch depending what is left of the bell hole, not the size of the stud.

Hi Pete,
Of course it may have been me to over-tight it when fitting it, I don't remember that anything went wrong, then. Undoing it however it just fell out (almost). No idea.
Whatever, of course the remaining hole is relevant, not the old stud.
Would someone here suggest glueing it in place "as is" (using JBWeld) might work ? I doubt, I think bastardizing it for the next size is better. Loosing it will strand the car, so...

Hi Carsten,
I had to renew the threads in my clutch housing. the thread size is 3/8" x 16 UNC.
I did not need to re drill the hole, I simply used the tap to create the treads for the Helicoil, or Recoil in my case.
I would avoid using a metric thread if I was you, you may have to also resize the hole in the clutch slave cylinder. Better to keep it simple and original.
