#1 removing the glove compartment?

Post by skiday » Sun Dec 18, 2016 4:43 pm

On my series 1.5 I am trying to remove the glove compartment, both for access to the area behind and also it would be nice to have the inside re-flocked (any suggestions as to who can do that?). I have undone the two nuts at the top (I have the dash top off) but now I find the bottom seems to be fixed by a rivet on either side just by where to door hinges screw on, and not pop rivets, but factory smooth headed rivets. It seems strange that it is fixed in a way that cannot be disassembled without drilling out rivets. How do I get the glove compartment out?

Drill out the rivets?

Pull it out from the top. Stick a new one in.

Hi Andrew.....you can get flocking kits to diy....think that frost sell them...but just google search.....re the rivets.....dont know if u can get to the underside of them but the kind used were domed on top and split and opened out at the bottom..if you can get long nosed pliers in and squeez the end together to release them..... managed to find some replacements in a local diy called split rivets....pop them through the card like glovebox material then a washer for added strength and open up the ends to secure....hope this helps

Andrew,

On my glove box, the rivets were actually split rivets. They had a smooth top and the "pin" portion was split and both sides were spread out to secure the rivet in place. Look under neath and see if they are the same.

Hope this helps.

It is underneath that they are a smooth dome, and I can't see the other side of the rivet, I assume it is within the card of the glovebox, or perhaps I haven't looked hard enough.
