I just use a large, deep socket and a mallet. Couple of good hits and the retainers come out.
Similarly there's a tool a bit like a punch that you use to put the retainers in.
Tool
I have not found a traditional C clamp compressor that fits.
Interestingly the tool seems to come apart to allow retainer removal too; never knew that

Hi Jonathan,
Do you own a 'normal' valve spring compressor? If so, I made up an adapter out of an old box spanner. Not pretty, but it worked a treat:
There are a couple of other things you may want to consider - as per the picture, a set of bucket hold-down plates and the fitting of inlet valve stem oil seals. You also need to modify the valve spring seats and valve collets or just buy new.
Let me know if you want to borrow the adapter and also the actual compressor.
Cheers.
