Gearbox Numbers
#1 Gearbox Numbers
Hi,
I have just started to take my Jan 62 RHD FHC apart and it confirmed that the number punched on the gearbox is EB 102 JS, this matches the Data Plate and the Jaguar Heritage Certificate. I am confused as Clausager in his book Factory Original Jaguar E Type states that the gearbox numbers started at EB 101. Does anybody have any ideas, theories etc as to why a Jan 62 car would appear to have such an early gearbox.
Thanks,
Keith Walker

I had an April (ish) 62 FHC which showed a gearbox number the same as a later car, according to the late Mike Cook, Jaguar archivist. He said my car was a personal export car and there was probably a warranty replacement box fitted after the owner’s initial UK/ Euro mileage. The removed box would then be fixed and fitted to a later car and show up on that data plate and certificate out of sequence with others being built at the same time.

Thanks,
That was a scenario that i had not thought of, if that had happened it may be possible to work out/ find out which car was originally fitted with gearbox EB 102 JS as it must have been one of the first production cars or an early pre-production car. Would Jaguar have sold new cars with "reconditioned" gearboxes ? Any further thoughts would be very welcome.
Regards
Keith

Checking with XKEdata shows gearbox EB103JS was fitted to car 875009
EJ134JS = 875021
EJ157JS = 875022
EJ160JS = 875023
EB131JS = 850011
EB156JS = 850017
EB = close ratio. Maybe further digging on XKEdata will tell you more but many cars do not have their gearbox number recorded.

Keith : I think you are correct and that EJ is in this case a misprint . EJ boxes were the early all synchro boxes fitted to a few late 3.8 cars and to the 1964-6 4.2 cars, and were closer ratio than the later KJ/KJS?KE boxes

EB with JS suffix refer to the shaved gears
EB with CR suffix refers to the close ratio gears
I was only quoting what was on the XKEdata records which obviously have misprints here and there.

Perhaps a silly question but does the number on the top of the gearbox selector mechanism match the number engraved on the top left hand corner of the cast iron gearbox case?Gadget wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2019 7:19 amHi,

One learns something new all the time. I thought the all synchro gearbox came out with the 4.2 in 1964. How many 3.8s were fitted with the all synchro and when did this start happening? Don’t have my Originality books with me here on holiday.christopher storey wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2019 10:04 amKeith : I think you are correct and that EJ is in this case a misprint . It must be the very late 3.8s..... mine is from June '64 (one of the last 150 LHD OTS cars produced) and it is still on an EB xxxxx JS gearbox number as per its heritage cert.Vonkie wrote: ↑Sat Aug 31, 2019 8:51 amOne learns something new all the time.
