I noticed that my wife is a little uncomfortable in longer journeys in the car because her feet do not reach the end of the footwell. I did consider the option of finding a wife with longer legs but in the end I sensed it would be a bit cheaper to make her a foot rest
I know a footrest was a factory option but I will admit i have never seen one (does anyone have a photo?) other than the one in the post which appears to be a simple flat board...

I can easily fabricate something that will work, but it might be nice to build something that looks like the original...

Yes, a simple flat board made of thick ply with hradura on one side. Wedges in place but my wife found it tended to twist position making one leg longer than the other causing hip discomfort. Easy fix is to add a triangular piece of wood to the rea as a 'foot'. I used a hinge to atach it so it could be folded flat. There are photos on here somewhere:

Print to A4 paper and tape the four pages together for a template. LHD is simply the same board turned over.

I wanted one for my car too and being handy I thought I’d build it, but after looking around for the right Hardura and edge trimming I went ahead and purchased a custom footboard from Suffolk & Turley. It’s beautifully made and looks completely original, and the price was reasonable at around £90. If you do wish to make your own, I can take some detailed pictures for you.
