BROWNS LANE PHOTO 14 JULY 1961

Can anyone help with how to get a good quality copy of the photo(s) taken outside the Browns Lane factory of the first batch of Roadsters on 14th July 1961?

I have also found a photo of the dealers collecting the cars, in the 15th July edition of the Coventry Evening News. On contacting them, I was referred to Mirrorpix Archives, but unfortunately their Coventry negative archive starts in April 1962.

Can't he!p with the source of the photos but if you need them for republication then remember that who ever took the photo still retains copyright so you would need to seek permission before using for any commercial purpose even though they date from 60 years back...may even be JLR if they commissioned the photoshoot!

The photo has been printed in various books over the years....may be work contacting a book publisher and see if they can help?

Try Jaguar Heritage Archives at Gaydon .
You will have to declare its exact usage , a licence with strict terms will be issued with a fee payable.
I have a 3.6m canvas print of the first e type race at Oulton Park licenced by JH , arranged by my son when he worked at Fuji UK .
Bit of luck JH will have it.

Hi Joe, the first batch of cars were destined for the dealer network as demonstrators and all were Roadsters. Jaguar stipulated that they had to be kept by the dealers for minimum 3 months before they could sell them.

My car (c/no: 850036) was the SH Newsome & Co.Ltd of Coventry demonstrator and can be see in the second row, with the registration 4444 RW.

Twenty of the fifty four cars are red which surprised me since I've often been told that this was not a popular colour back then. The rise of "resale red" came later apparently.
Maybe the dealers liked red but not so popular with the buying public!

Had a quick scan through a couple of books....can't spot either photo yet but I know I've seen them before....more books to go!

Chris, if you PM me your email address I'll send you a copy I have of that photo. I found it somewhere and did some cleanup in Lightroom to make it better - isn't super sharp but might work for your purposes.

I had no luck with mirrorpix. Their regional newspaper archives start in 1962. Archived photos prior to that were sent to landfill sometime back in the 1970's.
However, by a stroke of luck, whilst viewing a film on E Types I saw the briefest shot of the cars being collected from the factory. I have captured the image and here it is. Unfortunately there is no-one standing by my car.
