#1 looking for Km/h Speedo, have miles speedo... for E-1966

Post by MatthiasS » Sun Jan 11, 2015 11:04 pm

Hi together

i have an Miles Tacho from USA and need for Germany an Km/h Tacho. Anyone who is looking for Miles and wants to change his km/h Speedometer? Before disassembling my good working Tacho (14.000 Miles :-)) i would prefer another solution. You may contact me under hobie16fungmail.com or on my mobile +49 172 2965568 or send me a PN

Hi Matthias,

I wanted to do this too and decided to buy a Km/H speedo face from SNG. Fairly easy to change, the odometer still calculates in miles of course, but you can change back any time. Also I was able to move the needle of the sppedo to be accurate at the most common speed range of the car - here in Australia, 60 - 100 Km/h. I now have a very accurate gauge. A swap is desireable, but if not, this method worked for me.

Simon

Another fix (which is entirely legal in Scandinavia at least) is to take off the glass and Letraset on a second set of inner figures (for KPH). And then obviously put the glass back on, refit speedometer to dash.

E.g. Letraset in 100 just inside the 60, etc, etc

Cheap as chips, and easy to do.

Hi
Thanks for this advices :-) Legal in Germany is also to put am Mark on 50 km/h and 80 and 100 km/h but i would prefer to get distance displayed in km and Speed also......

Workaround is only the second best solution

Matthias,

Excellent blog that you have. I agree that you need the proper solution for your speedo, given that the standard you have achieved on the engine is quite simply stunning. Well done! And well done too for converting a swimming pool into a workshop. Talk about dream garage!

Part way through the blog there is a facsimile of an advert (written in english) for a lovely one owner car from USA, with extra fog lights in the front, silver colour, and apparently 12.000 miles on the clock. Do I understand correctly that this is the car you bought, same item. I am guessing the the wear you have seen on the engine and on the gearbox layshafts do not equate to 12.000 miles, maybe the car did 112.000 miles. What is your thoughts?

I have only read the pictures (which say a 1000 words), and not read the german text, my german is very rusty.

You could send your current speedo to one of the pros and get them to restore/calibrate it for you. Cost is about ?75 I seem to recall e.g.

Hallo David
nearly everything of the description of the car was a lie - exept the case that the Body - exept the right bart of the back - which had a very badly mended accident - is really very solid and rustless.

The parts and panels that were replaced after the accident - witch was not told by the selling Company - are rusty and have to be replaced. The real milage of the car must be more than 100 K Miles. But the Engine had nearly no wear off on crancshaft, camshaft, bearings and Pistons - but replacing the bearings and pistons, polishing the crancshaft and replacing the valves and all running gear is not such a big story and so it was worth to make it a really "Bolt & Nut New" engine and carbs.

Same will be done with gearbox this weekend, when all parts hopefully arrive from SNG in Netherlandes.

Referring to the speedo
- thanks fo thr hints - i will have to contact a pro!
But first i will remove my rear axle to see the exactly Transmission Ratio of the car.

Are there different gears in the gearbox for the speedo signals or has this always to be adjusted at the speedo itself?

i suppose i do have a 3.07 axle in the car.
I DID NOT EXACTLY UNDERSTAND YOUR TABLE
If i have a 205 x 15 tyre (this type is not in your table but seems to be similar to 185x15)
a 3.07 axle and want km/h then i need SN 6322/42?????

OK Found the number in the workshop Manual parts list as the speedo itself.
there must be a different insert for miles and km so changing it by a pro should be possible.

My Gearbox Serial Number is EJ6696

Thanks for your Kind help!

I had the same issue, changing from MPH to KPH.
Bought a new speedo face at SNG and changed the gear ratio in the speedo meter.

Take out the speedo meter, fix a paper needle at the inner cable and count the revolutions when the car is driven (pushed) over a accurate distance (I took exact 20 meters).
With this info the transmission gears in the speedo meter can be changed resulting in:
- very acccurate speed indication
- very accurate distance

Did this twice as I changed later to 2.88 final drive ratio, which I can only recommend
Speedo was W=740, now W=650 costs (2018) EUR 220

I had my speedo meter rebuilt at "Van Engelen Intruments" in Rotterdam.
If you want more info just let me know

- Change ratio US for 3.07 EU

Not very expensive and above all did by a real professional !
A very quality work
