#1 Importing a Series 1 2+2 from France

Post by slightp » Mon May 16, 2022 3:06 pm

I am purchasing a 1967 late Series 1 2+2 from a dealer in France. Does anyone have any knowledge of the paperwork involved and how to re-register the vehicle in the UK? I could use a car importer, but the current lead times are 6/8 weeks, whereas the dealer has a transporter who can manage the crossing in 10 days, subject to me dealing with an agent for the T1 import duty? Thanks

Hello slightp (or do you have another name? If so add it to your signature when you’ve a chance.)
Welcome to the best place for all things E Type. A search on hear for importing, import or similar words will produce a lot of help and look at suggested topics below.
Have you read all the DVLA info at:
https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-i ... ed-vehicle
If you have then that is a good start point.
Otherwise the search as suggested until others have their say.

Good luck

Hi Slightp

Last month I imported a Series 1 FHC from the EU. Here's what I did .....
Go onto UK HMRC web site and get an EORI (European Operators Registration and Identification) number - quick and simple and no charge.
With an EORI number apply for an ATaR (Advance Tariff Ruling) again via HMRC web site. Use a
Commodity code of 9705100090 and provide the requested details and pictures. You can search for a similar ruling and note that on your application. The commodity code will guarantee you the 5% effective rate of VAT on import. In reality VAT is still charged at 20% but only on 1/4 of the car's value as it will meet the historic classification. There is no import duty to pay.
You could just drive through UK Customs via the tunnel. HMRC confirmed that I should use the 'green' channel when entering into the UK. You then get 10 days to pay your import VAT and will receive the NOVA from HMRC which DVLA will want before registering your car.
You will need valid insurance whilst abroad and Hagerty supplied a policy which included a single delivery trip to UK using the chassis number for the certificate.
All good so far but DVLA said that after Brexit it was no longer possible for a UK driver to drive a foreign registered vehicle on UK roads. So you will need a transporter waiting for you in UK. Or collect on a transporter which you can hire in UK. But really depends on distances involved and your desire.
I found the HMRC office in Belfast to be very helpful with all my questions. Just bear in mind the HMRC website is out of date and may take you down some dead ends.
I'm now dealing with DVLA and the paperwork is as follows .....

DVLA V55/5 registration of used motor vehicle
DVLA V765 register under original registration number - needs counter signing by local club
DVLA V112 declaration exempt from MOT (category 'r')
HMRC NOVA reference number
DVLA photo copy of driving licence
Certificate of motor insurance
Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate to confirm original numbers
plus a photo of your car

DVLA part might take 4 weeks.

I hope the above is of some use.

Richard

HI Richard
Many thanks for such a full Resposne. One quick follow-on question if I may: did you do the whole EORI number and ATaR application before driving back from the EU (France in this case) or can this be done immediately once back in the UK?
Many thanks
Paul

Hi Paul

I applied for the EORI and ATaR in advance of my purchase.
Both are quite simple and quick to do and for the ATaR you can search the HMRC data base for similar
vehicles and use that as a basis for your application. The ATaR guarantees the vat you will pay rather than perhaps having to slug it out with an official on the day.

My experiences of the EORI submission, all be it an unrelated industry, across Europe:

no EORI or incorrect reference number: NO access, goods returned

be careful.

thats some response Richard, even though I have no interest in the process now or in the future, you couldn't ask for more, I was impressed and I'm not even importing a car !! :drinkingcheers:

John
