#1 S1 4.2 1966 Muffler Clips

Post by Dad » Tue May 30, 2023 1:50 am

I'm about to replace the mufflers on my 1966 s1 4.2 FHC and found out in Haddock's restoration guide that (for my chassis number) the mufflers changed in Dec 1966 from being welded to the tailpipes to being clipped to them (listed only by Porter). Can anyone point me at any kind of catalogue reference for these clips, as I can't seem to find them anywhere!

Many thanks.

This may be what you are looking for. They look very close to the ones on my 67.

Many thanks, Danny and Geoff! I suppose what I'm asking is 'what are these clips supposed to look like', because I can't find any reference images for what was used when the change was made to my chassis number back in Dec '66. Both items you've sent look legit and handsome, but which is 'proper'...?

Standard E-Type obscure originality quest, that may or may not result in quibbles and arguments with concourse judges

Found easily on MOSS UK site but not on MOSS Motors USA site (different clamps):

For reference, I checked mine and they have those stainless steel clamps U bolts as shown above.

According to my research (which I'm not claiming is definitive!), I suspect your mufflers may be replacements of the originals, as mufflers were welded on prior to Dec '66.

It may well be that my exhaust isn’t original, it came with the car on purchase and was in good condition and it didn’t need replacing at the time of restoration.

Not sure why that’s so funny? I’m replacing the originals on mine 😁

Appreciate the picture - I believe those are the fellas.

It's interesting to note the angle of the center muffler hangers in that drawing, as the current replacement parts are very vertical. Perhaps one of the contributing factors to them not lasting as long in service?
