#1 Scraping Sound from rear wheel s1 fhc
Hi all,
I have this sound coming from the driver
Side rear wheel. It started as a light rub like the
Rubber was hitting a part of the car. Then got louder and changed into what it is now, like a wire is wrapped around a wheel or something metal scratching. From what I understand it can be anything from a bearing to a handbrake. Anyone any idea on the video of the sound. I was on my
Own without a way to jack up the
Rear end so I rolled it myself. Comments in the video in Dutch but not relevant to understand;-) thx for the advice

It sounds like a loose spoke creaking. If you get a wooden stick or a pencil and run it around the spokes they should all make a ringing noise, if there is a dull thud from one area that is a loose spoke.
If you can get to jack up the wheel and rotate it and the creaking noise is gone it probably does confirm a loose spoke.

Two possibilities:
1. The joint cover protecting the outer journals (44) is loose and is rubbing
2. The water thrower on the rear hub assembly (30) is loose

Check that water thrower
if I take the wheel off? But it would save me the hassle of a possible wheel bearing replacement

If the water thrower comes loose (which is not very likely), you should be able to reach behind the wheel and feel for its movement. It's right at the outside end of the aluminum casting, and right up against the rear of the wheel hub.
More likely is the cover over the outer U-joint, which is just thin metal and can become bent, and therefore scrape the inside of the aluminum casting, due to road debris. If so, you should be able to scraping marks in the aluminum.

Also worth checking that the rear shock absorbers are not moving around and interfering with the rotating driveshaft.
I had this once when a PO assembled them without all the spring perches/dust covers.The shocks were not centered or held firm within the springs properly.
Sounded like a steam train slowing down for the station every time I came slowed for a junction.

Yes the shock absorber was also on my list. It all started after I had a fairly heavy passenger on board

Well I managed to jack up the rear end with a saab900 classic jack and a block of wood between the exhaust pipes. Worked real good.
Anyway I found the joint covers to be in fine order and also the water thrower for as far as I could see.
I did find quite a lot of play in the wheel. Both sides left and right have some play but there seems more play in the left one where the sound comes from in the first place.
The real loud scraping sound is not present at the moment but it comes and goes when I roll it for a longer time. Starting with a soft woof woof woof.

There should be almost no perceptible wheel movement when you grab the wheel side to side or top to bottom when the wheel is raised of the ground. Can you determine if the wheels are loose on the hubs? (caused by very worn splines, or an aftermarket wheel nut (spinner) 'bottomed out' on the threads and not holding the wheel tight). If the wheel is in fact tight on the hub, then the rear wheel bearings are failing.

A few days ago I took the E-Type out for an early season spin and as I pulled away from stop lights and stop signs I began to hear a "clicking" noise coming from the right rear.
I suspected a broken spoke, and tapped each of them as suggested, but none had any abnormal sound.
Then I read more of the comments and shifted my attention to the U-Joint cover. Sure enough, it had been rubbing against the casting. I never did hear the scraping sound (at my age I'm lucky if I hear anything), but I did see that there were signs of wear, and then I saw that the two outermost rivet heads had been worn off, allowing the end of the cover to pop loose. The edges of the cover would then apparently would get caught on the casting and click as they went by a high spot.
A very easy fix--just put in a couple new pop rivets, but first drill a new hole for them to pull the cover a little tighter and avoid that scraping contact.

I left my U joint shields off during my recent IRS rebuild. My car very rarely sees rain, and always stays on pavement, and after shield hassles with all three of the E types I've owned, I decided "enough".

As for mine. I have asked my jaguar specialist to figure it out in their garage. I will update once we have news so maybe it can help another one or two.
