#1 Lower chain tensioner

Post by No Quarter » Sun Jun 15, 2025 5:38 am

The replacement part from my local guy is quite different, is it correct for my engine? Read a few hours here and on Jag-Lovers, haven't found a firm conclusion...

First, my engine is a late 3.8, so it has the setup shown here that Haynes says is for 4.2

The OEM tensioner used afaik both a spring and oil pressure. But the new one on the right has no provision for oil entering, it also has no bolt at the end to remove to use Allen key. But it does have a red plastic thingy.

So:
1. Is this the new and improved design for our engines, or did I get the wrong one?
2. If it's the right one, is the procedure to install with red plastic, move dampers so chain is tight, remove plastic. The I would have the 3mm gap and the tensioner would be activated?
3. Some write about inferior quality, bad bonding? Reynold being better? Haven't found one...

The oil hole is there; it's just tiny.

That does look like the junk one. I think Rob Beere had stock of the good ones.
