Now the top chrome was a bit manky; I didn't get it rechromed as I'd had problems with the chromers distorting them.
So I bought some new chromes, but I've been putting off fitting them for a couple of years, having heard how poorly the repros fit.
After driving it a few weeks ago one end had come loose essentially because there was very little glue under it.
So I bit the bullet and took the old chrome off.
I decided what I'd do was do a trial fit with no glue, just to see how bad it was going to be. I used the old chrome as a template and bent the new one until it was pretty much identical.
I went to offer it up to the seal and surprisingly it took me maybe 10 minutes to get it fitted with the top and bottom flanges of the seal fitting really well.
So I took it off, laid down a substantial bead of clear RTV silicone and just put it back in again. Again, about 10 minutes. I held it in place with suction clamps over night and it is now a thing of beauty. Well it will be once I finish cleaning the little smears of silicone off.
So there you go.
