#1 PREVIOUS OWNER SEARCH?

Post by Stevemorris » Wed May 20, 2026 7:33 pm

Hi all, I am looking to trace the previous owners of my car. I have confirmed the 3 owners back to 1981, but have no details of any before this date. I have an old blue V5 which states the car had had 3 previous owners before the last known owner, but of course not who they are.

Now the DVLA must have records of this, but I am not sure how forthcoming they will be regarding telling me who they were? It's clearly only to piece together the history of the car of course, but I am guessing they won't be letting me have the details?

Has anyone got experience of this they could share please?

Thanks, Steve.

No chance now with DVLA or local authorities since the advent of data protection.....Steve

It is a shame that the DVLA won’t give details any more. I obtained mine more than twenty years ago, long before all the protection of digital data became a thing.

Despite having this knowledge I am no better off as most of the earliest owners of my car have left no digital footprints to follow up. For only one of the first four owners is there any searchable evidence - and that is the newspaper report of his funeral. All others, including the first have disappeared into the ether, remembered only by their family and friends, the tax man and my records of my car’s previous owners.
