#1 Had your E-Type sprayed Opalescent Maroon in the last decade or two?

Post by No Quarter » Mon Jun 01, 2026 4:09 pm

My E-Type project, 1964, is supposed to end up looking something like this. The color according to Heritage is supposed to be Opalescent Maroon. My painter, to whom I have given all the codes I could find from that time, some found on this forum, says that it does not help him, he needs newer codes.

The color can never be 100% the same, for example. it was without clearcoat over it back then, but something similar to the picture. Is there anyone in the forum with an E-Type Series 1 in the Opalescent Maroon who will help with the (modern) paint codes (and a picture)?
Thanks

Auto paints Brighton https://shop.autopaintsbrighton.co.uk/ can supply Opalescent Dark Blue as a gloss from the gun (i.e. no clearcoat), which I’ve got on my project car. Even if it’s not practical or legal to import paints from them, perhaps they could spray a small metal plate in your Opalescent Maroon and send it to you?
That could give your painter a good reference, assuming you like what you see.

This modern code has been mentioned to me from two sources now: Glasurit JAG-7421A. Any experience?

I had mine painted a couple of years ago in opalescent maroon. I will dig out the code and post it here.
I would also post a photo if I knew how !

So this is what my painter used;
Nexa 1YYNB
Solvent B/C

I had the external panels painted and the bonnet internally.
The match to the previously painted panels seemed perfect and I was very happy

I’ve no idea what these codes mean !

I spent a long time trying to find paint codes and a supplier of opalescent maroon, wading through Jag Lovers and this forum. I took each colour code I found to a number of paint suppliers around Manchester and every time I got the same answer, no chance. One supplier suggested they might be able to do it in cellulose but it would cost twice as much as basecoat. After more than a year of searching I reluctantly decided the best option would be to go with Regency Red which was the original colour and is reasonably close to Opalescent Maroon except for it being a solid colour rather than metallic. So off I went to my chosen supplier and while discussing my choice with one of the counter guys, a young woman that works for them chirped in and asked what colour I had wanted. I told her all the codes were useless but it is called opalescent light maroon (there may be a dark version) so she went straight to the computer and ten seconds later asked me how much I wanted. Everyone was gobsmacked but she insisted she was correct so I took an initial chance with a litre. This is basecoat so needs a clearcoat on top but the end result was exactly what I wanted. According to the label it is International Paint (manufacturer) the code at the bottom of the label is what the mixing scheme uses to mix the required colour.
I hope this helps.

Tim's, gorgeous. But a little dark compared to my expectations perhaps.

I now got a single part from another E-Type, that looks like the paint I want, my painter should be able to copy. Any opinions? I know pictures can alter colours etc.

Yes, that is significantly different to mine. I stripped all the old paint off mine apart from a few places where the painter and I could compare samples with existing. These were places that I felt comfortable that they had not been previously repainted. The match was good to the original colour.

As a slight aside stripping the old paint using strip discs wash an arduous task. Made even more arduous when removing underseal from the wheel arches with a hot air gun and scraper. Long gauntlets are a must , hot underseal sticks to you very well.

I think that you’re right, take the sample to a painter or paint factor and they can scan it.
