#1 Jag gearbox with overdrive for S1 2+2.

Post by Malc » Wed Jul 10, 2013 7:46 pm

Having just bought, what I hope is, a lovely Series 1 2+2 and had it inspected by Angus (thanks Angus), my thoughts are turning to a bit of winter fettling! As I want to use the car for holidays, amongst other things, I am considering fitting a five speed box, but as mine is a 2+2, I am aware that I can fit a four speed Jaguar box with overdrive for a fraction of the cost of a new five speed. However can anyone tell me the type of box that will fit (are you there Peter?)? I had assumed that an XJS box would do the trick but before I search for second hand ones, I would be grateful if someone would confirm if this is right or if there are any others that would fit. I have also read that no modifications are necessary to the tunnel or fittings and again, any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks

Malc (lovely new shiny Series 1 2+2, navy blue, grey leather!).

Congratulations Malc, you got there! Pete Crespin is probably the best source of information on the MOD gearbox and hopefully he will chip in with what to look for. Angus is really good at this isn't he?

Well, it took me six months, and, purely by coincidence and a bit of good fortune, I bought one that I'd had my eye on at the end of last year - then the vendor changed his mind, but changed it again a couple of weeks ago - so I got it while I could. Relief to have Angus give it the thumbs up and good to go through the car with him at his place and discuss things to be done (and to be fair, for him to curb my excited enthusiasm to upgrade everything!). I shall just enjoy it.

No such thing as an XJ-S overdrive bo, you need the XJ or S-type version with Compact Type A overdrive which drops straight in. The XJ version needs the top swapped over from your current four speed.

Sadly, this conversion is a victim of my proselytising as the boxes are going up significantly in price these days. Still far cheaper than a five speed. The XJS five speed won't fit without a lot of work, especially if it's the type without a speedo drive. I have a speedo drive Getrag near Newmarket which should become availavle before too long.

Even the Series 3 XJ 5-speed is a bit of work but the overdrive is a straight swap. My first E was a dark blue 2+2 with grey leather. 1E75339 will eventually re-emerge as a D-type.

Thanks Peter - can you tell me the years to look for in respect of the XJ & S-type boxes? I won't be doing the work myself but I know a man who can!

Pete - sorry, forgot to ask, I don't suppose a Mk 2 box with overdrive would fit, as I happen to know someone who is selling one.

Any XJ or S-type overdrive box will do, since those are the ones which used the 'Compact Type A' OD which is the only one that fits without surgery. It follows that if anything else had fitted I'd have said 'or Mk1 or 2 or ....'

Having said that, it is possible some rare bird like a manual limo box might fit. Soi rather than say categorically that nothing but an XJ or S-type overdrive box will fit, I'll say any Jag 4-synchro with the right overdrive. If it doesn't say Compact Type A on the little plate over the adjustable lever then it's not the right overdrive. No Mk2 had it.

Even more basic is the length measurement. If the overall length from bell to output flange isn't identical to a 2+2 manual or auto it isn't the right box. 27.5 inches, from vague memory.

There is an overdrive box on eBay at the moment - not sure if it is correct though - Pete will know! http://tinyurl.com/q7hqc5j Vendor says it came out of a 4.2.

Thanks David for keeping an eye out! Seems to be missing the gear linkage but might be able to re-use existing. Not quite sure what a '4.2' Jaguar is, in that it could be a number of cars, but the box looks similar to the photos of Jos Ravens' box on his website. I'll e-mail the vendor to see if he can give me any more information. Meanwhile if Pete is out there....

Pete is out here and was the first bidder on that box and intends to be the last in due course.

I have a standing search for them that gives me email notifications but was alerted to this one by someone else as I'll be in Hope Valley in a month's time and can collect. I have a half-full pallet with a Getrag conversion and want to add this to spread the horrendous US shipping costs across two boxes.

Oh dear, this could be difficult.................!! Well Pete's note has at least confirmed it's the right 'box and Hope Valley is a lovely place to visit. Mind you, there seems to be more than one person interested by the looks of it. Must warm up my bidding finger.......

Pete - you've got a free run on the 'box on Ebay as, rather fortuitously, I've managed to find one elsewhere - so good luck with your bidding.

Was it the other one that came onto eBay and then closed very quickly? Looked nice.

It was indeed - I made him an offer he couldn't refuse! It will be interesting to see the price that the current one goes for - I'll either be smug or gutted!

#20 o/d gearbox

Post by Simon Bolton » Sat Aug 03, 2013 6:01 pm

Just seen this thread and thought I would throw in my twopennyworth. Peter sold me an xj o/d just before he deserted these shores. I was persuaded by both Peter and David that it was the best route and so it was.
A bugger to fit(engine out job) but so worth it. Just been on a long trip to Italy and cruising was a delight-unstressed and 28mpg consumption!
Best of luck (and yes even the timing pointer has to come off-it's that tight when you take the engine out)
Whilst its out put a new clutch in and do all the big end shells and check the oil pump-
