Having renovated a1967 Series 1.5 on start up and switch off get an overspill from the Oil Breather - it was not initially dripping following overall but more recent !
The Breather is not routed to the air filter but just to the open at the side of the engine block to the atmosphere.
Any thoughts on why so many drips on start up as driving out of the garage when shutdown it leaks to a drip tray.
Regards,
Stewart

Have you over filled the engine? Don't believe the dipstick until you have calibrated it - always fill up with the correct amount of oil and see where the level reaches. For example on my 4.2 with exactly 8.5 litres of oil the level comes to the top of the hatching, on my 3.8 it is exactly half way. Also have you checked the breather outlet is not gunged up? When you say the breather is open at the side of the engine block I assume you have run the silver corrugated breather hose part# C2485/1 "Flexible pipe for breather on front cover 27" long" (as used on XK's and very early E-Type's) down to the RH undershield?

Drips of what Stewart? Drips of water would be normal if not hidden by venting to the air cleaner plenum.stewart wrote:

Stewart, it's quite a while since I had an XK engine in bits, but what immediately came to mind was - did you refit the baffle plate between the breather cap and cylinder head, also vaguely recall that the baffle can be fitted in different orientations, so if incorrect, would trap oil mist allowing it to settle and drain out of the vent instead of back into the crankcase!

Not sure if the 4.2 is the same as the 3.8 but I overfilled mine due to not getting the dip stick in correctly. If the dip stick is just slightly bent it can miss the hole in the oil surg plate and skid over the top of it. This results in a false low reading and you keep adding more to compensate. Result is oil all over the place. A slim chance but you never know.
