#1 Gearbox level test tool

Post by Garybreadner » Thu Oct 09, 2014 3:28 pm

I'm just in the process of replacing the carpets in my FHC and noticed a pouch inlaid on the passenger side carpet which John Skinner the carpet provider ( and great replacement carpets they are! ) tells me was part of the original spec. I suspect this is to house a tool to check gearbox oil level and was wondering if this is correct and whether anyone has a picture of one.
Thanks all !

The replacement carpets I installed in my '65 FHC years ago had the same pocket. I assumed that it was to retain the jute padding, which would have to be moved out of the way to check the gearbox oil. Anyone have other thoughts?

Planning on getting E-Type No. 3 as soon as possible....

Jaguar did not do things without a reason but there is no mention of a tool to measure oil level in the gearbox. The pocket is for sound proofing as Moe suggests. The carpet flap hinges upwards, is held by two pop studs and including the jute inside would simplify the operation.
