Is there a minimum thickness for a flywheel?
Does anyone know the original thickness from the base of the ring gear to the surface of the flywheel?
I'm looking at at least 40 thousands off mine and it probably was resurfaced once before I owned the car.
Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated!!

If I could know the original thickness of a 3.8 flywheel from the base to the face, I would be much obliged.

Hi there. This is a pretty specialist question but I am sure that two "skims" would not be enough to cause a problem. There is a lot of meat on the flywheel. What is your concern exactly ?

My concern is that it might fail on me if it's too thin and take my legs.
the face was badly scored either b/c it was surfaced poorly in the past or the clutch caused very uneven wear.
I've had two machine shops that do jag's say I should be fine, but I had one shop say he had a flywheel break up on him while the engine was on a dyno and it blew thru a wall!
I'm not racing but I want to be safe. it would give me peace of mind if I knew how thick a wheel for a 3.8 (standard not lightened) was in original condition, so I knew for sure how much metal was taken before me.

I see nothing wrong in asking the question in two places. You have not got an answer here in any event . It is relevant to your problem that there is much less meat on a 3.8 than on a 4.2 . The latter weighs some 26 lbs and thus there is room for error : the 3.8 one from memory is only about 17 lbs

I'm at work and my flywheel is at home so I can't measure, but doing some ballpark calcs I get a 40 thou (e.g. 1mm) skim to be around 1 lb in weight reduction.
This is based on inner / outer diameter of the surface being skimmed being around 360mm / 240mm (guestimation)
Not sure if this helps, but maybe puts things a little in perspective, at least if you know how much has previously been skimmed.
