E type upholstery

Greetings and happy Christmas!
I am looking to replace my 1966 roadster interior and was curious if anyone knows the new Connelly leather seats - if they are really worth triple the price of anything else! And if anyone can recommend other alternatives that would be very helpful. Thank you thank you.

I think this comes down to a personal issue - I have received a swatch from Conolloy of the original Vaumol and for myself it is a must have. I have seen quite a few high end restorations and the disappointment has been the rather synthetic in appearance leather that has been used - there is relatively little leather used in the e type and the cost issue really does not amount to a great deal...

I believe only the face of the seats is leather, the back is vinyl.

Backs are Moquette on the earlier cars.

Seats - leather
Back of seats - moquette
Front face of radio consul including ashtray face - leather
Centre consul - leather on the top
Arm rest cushion - leather.
Gear shift cover - originally a heat shrink plastic but if you are a glutton for punishment you can use leather or vinyl .. make allowances for thickness change (you may have to adjust the size of the plywood base). Some people have put a seam forward of the shifter in order to get a nice fit and make installation easier.

Bought a complete kit from one of the usual suspects.

I had the seats done professionally and the balance I did. Took my time and learned some tricks along the way.

Gear shift cover on the 3.8's was leather. On the later 4.2's it was Ambla, the registered trademark of a vinyl material backed onto a knitted cotton or synthetic and available in a range of colours. The knitted backing means that vinyl stretches in multiple directions allowing more intricate trim profiles. It was originally an ICI product but now made by Wardle Storey under the trade name 'Ambla'.

Vaumol, its just the best. Even though I am not using my 3.8 in this weather, I have to open the door and have a smell every now again just to get my fix. Not many of the other leathers hit the spot like Vaumol to be honest.

The original Connolly hide company went bust ages ago. I think it got resurrected but not sure if the "recipe" as the same as before they went bust.....

The interior looks superb, wonderful work!

All you have to do now is find a way of bottling the aroma - that would be one way to cover the resto costs?

The 60's aroma on opening any Jaguar (240/340 excepted) was such a heady, rich and pleasing encounter. The first thing I do when coming across any car from this period is to stick my nose in and take a good sniff.

Mostly these days it is a very disappointing experience, so to find Vaumol will bring this back is a very fine thing to hear, especially as the 60's content would have included cellulose - which is now banned.

Good for J Conolloy I hope his initiative pays off.

I'm going to be needing a re trim for my 65 car. How do you choose between:

Aldridge
BAS
John Skinner
Suffolk & Turley

etc........

I'm leaning towards BAS or Skinners, buti'm not sure why..

Suffolk and Turley. You can spot the tight seaming on their trimming. The absolute best is New Forest Classics. Daniel, who does all their trimming is just fantastic, but to get him to trim your car you would have to wait a couple of years, and a bill for ?15k. Expect to pay around ?9k with S&T. Nearer ?15k with NFC.

I wonder if you are asking two separate questions? one being: supply of material, the other being who to carry out the work?

I started off by asking each for a swatch sample of all the relevant materials and believe you would have to specify the Vaumol as most have their own leather suppliers.

You might also wish to add CMC to your list (as an upholsterer)
