#1 S1 Mudshield Sealing Rubber Strip

Post by velotech » Thu Feb 18, 2016 7:54 pm

I'm replacing the all but gone original rubber strips and find that my new bits (and all the photos I find in related posts) are a smooth rubber. The original strips from my '63 have a crosshatched texture to them. Does anyone know where I could source a more correct rubber for this? And for that matter, is there any kind of consensus on who might sell the most correct rubber seals for things like the doors and windows? I would prefer suppliers here in the States, but if a UK source is the best, I'd be willing to use them.

Thanks,
Rory

Hi,
Don't you speak about this kind of seal ?

No, it is the rubber that attempts to seal the inner fender mudshields to the bonnet. These strips are held to the mudshields with rivets. I was mistaken when I described the texture of the original rubber as being crosshatched - holding one in my hand yesterday I think it would be better described as having a simple diagonal pattern.

But Thanks for the response.

I replaced mine recently (using pop rivets) and certainly SNG Barratt only supply it in rolls of smooth rubber. Does the job though.

Michel : the original , I think , which by the sound of it you have, may have been a kind of rubberised fabric which is no longer available as far as I know . As Malcolm says, the smooth rubber is just as good and may even be better, because if moulds to the gaps rather better than the stiff fabric did

You're both right in that the smooth replacement rubber is better than the original in that it is definitely more pliable. I was happy to use it in a car I had years ago as my daily driver and it worked well. But this car is so original that function must take a back seat to originality. Besides, as you might have heard, it never rains here in California.

Rory

OEM was smooth, thick and with rounded not cut edges. No canvass inside the AFAIK. Just a wide flat rubber extrusion without crosshatched/herringbone or other pattern I think.

#9 Rubber seals

Post by cactusman » Sat Feb 20, 2016 10:06 am

I got the seal strip from SNG. Comes as a smooth rubber about 30 mm wide and 3 or so mm deep. Have to say I fixed mine on with small M3 metric stainless steel bolts washers and nylock nuts! I know it is not original but easier to remove again later!!!!! All you concourse types will now be having a fit....lol....

Does seem to keep most of the muck in the wheel arch much to my surprise....not that mine goes out much in mucky weather..

Steve,

I did search through the Factory Fit area, but I couldn't find a photo with enough resolution to show what I'm talking about. There is actually a pretty good shot of the right hand side mudshield rubber on my car (4th down in the 3.8 Factory Fit post), but you can't see any texture on the rubber.

I can't be certain, but I believe that the rubber I removed had never been replaced. It's not coated fabric, and it's just over 2 inches wide and just under 1/8 inch thick. The new rubber is the same thickness but a 1/4 inch wider, as well as looking different. The search continues...
