Hi,
If you come to France, you'll find 95 E5 and 98 E5. You'll also find 95/E10
Not all stations offer the full range because of the number of tanks they have available.
Just a reminder: Octane is only an anti-detonator and it's always better to choose a petrol with a high octane level but not for pure performance but because the explosion will take place when the ignition decides and not when the petrol explodes alone.

I use Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 ..... and, from their website:

"Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 contains zero ethanol, except (for logistics reasons) sites supplied from Scotland, North Wales, North England and Cornwall."
Dear Chris,
I was quoting from memory.
Thank you for correcting me.

I've opened a can of worms but interesting to see ranks closing after what I considered an unnecessary comment. Thanks all for participating in this lively discussion its been enlightening. Shall we move onto best colour E type now? Mine is Carmen red......

It might interest you to know that Steve is the moderator for this board . He is entitled to have the last word. What I really cannot understand is why you have tried to pick a quarrel with someone who was only trying to clarify what you had identified as an uncertain situation ( and I also regret that it was I who created the uncertainty in the first place by putting the wrong octane numbers in the post )

This is getting tiresome. It's been fun bantering with you chaps - enjoy the sunshine and don't take it all too seriously.

I feel a ban coming on - want to test me Bernie? Bad enough sniping at other members but having a go at one of our Moderators is unforgivable.

Anyone with experience of getting better mpg from the E5 98 stuff ? It is more expensive than the E10 , but that may be cancelled out by the improved mpg . I just got back from a 1000 mile tour of Scotland and had to use E10 most of the way . Car seemed to run ok and I got 25 mpg for the trip .

I was thinking the same. I just did a 500 mile run, filled up with E5 first then topped up with E10 during the run. I didn't notice any difference in start-up or running. I've been doing this for six years now and can honestly say it's seemed to make no difference whatever fuel i put in

Are you talking about the effect of using bio fuel (E5/E10) or the difference between octane ratings (95/99 RON) as they are two totally different subjects?

Does the 3.8 need an additive? I’ve seen two answers to this question 1 No, 2 Yes
I’ve only put petrol in the car once as it’s only gone from where i bought it to the garage where we’re working on it, and the previous owner gave me a bottle of Redex and told me to stick some in. Thought it might be time to ask the experts
There is no need for an additive - Jaguars are not like many cars which did not have hardened valve seats and therefore needed an additive when unleaded fuel became the norm. However, Redex will do no harm at all and is useful for minimising gum deposition in the fuel system , as well as reducing wear on a cold start
Thanks for clarifying Christopher - just what i needed to know 👍

I am ingorant enough to not know that  I understand the E5/E10 but what exactly is the difference with 95/99 octane? I assumed it was the same as buying cheap lager and Stella Artois. I put the latter into my body but am a cheapskate when it comes to my car.

Put simply the octane rating is how much pressure the fuel can be put under before detonation. That pressure is determined by the compression ratio of the engine so the higher the compression the higher the octane rating of the fuel needs to be. If you use a low octane fuel in a high compression engine you will get pre-detonation (aka 'pinking'), i.e. the fuel explodes before the piston is at its correct designed position. This results in damage to the piston and valves which will be hugely expensive. When the E-Type was produced all fuel had a star rating relating to the octane level and it was designed to run on 5 Star petrol or 'Super' as it was also known, rated at 100 octane+. When you went to the pumps back then you had a choice of fuels and everyone pretty well stuck to what the manufacturer recommended for their car as a matter of pride:

5-Star = 100 octane (Super or Supreme)
4-Star = 98 octane (Premium)
3-Star = 93 octane (Mixture)
2-Star = 87 octane (Regular)

So unlike your analogy of cheap lager and Stella, neither of which will cause you harm, using cheap low octane fuel in an E-Type is a false economy. I refer once again to Jaguar's clear and unequivocal statement in the handbook:
Image

The E5/E10 rating refers to how many orangutans are dying because they are decimating their habitat to plant palm oil to add to fuel in the name of saving the planet.

Only use Super Unleaded in an E-Type with a 9:1 compression head.

David

Thank you for the clear explanation. I will only take you to task on the point that neither lager will harm my body. Having fallen over in the past after copious quantities, I can assure you that they will harm oyur body :P

As for the Jag, I guess it's super only from now on.

Hello All, Just a quick word on this subject, on this side on the pond all you can get is fuel with 10% ethanol. At least in Ma. I also run the cheapest premium (Super unleaded) that i can find. Its a 62 OTS 3.8 and i have put over 37000 miles on it since 2012 with no problems. no pinking, no knocking, nice tickover , pulls great and starts on the button. And its has a 9.1 head on it. Just my two cents worth. RF PS and 20 mpg too!
