Choice of tyres on Dayton wire wheels
#21
Been good reading the 'Which tyre size and manufacturer' thread. I am going to run with the P4000 - what have people paid for these. Seems ?130/140inc vat per corner unless someone has a particulray generous supplier somewhere they would care to share?
Thanks,
Malcolm

I have Michelin XVS on mine and they seem fine in the dry, bit limited in the wet but dont know E's well enough to know if any other tyre would improve this, I have just had the original Jaguar wires refurbed and would like to fit something new and high performance on to them for a change if the need arises, have used the Vredestein's on MK2/V8s for several years and very impressed with grip, never had a faulty one either.

Interested to hear that you had your original wheels refurbished. The usual response from wheel suppliers is that it isn't cost effective to do it. Who did you use to do them ? Are they chromed or painted ?
Thanks,
Nick

Hi Nick, The wheels were true and tight but a bit rusty, I have had them powder coated, they have turned out nice, not too sure what to do with them now though!

#25 AVON vs. Pirelli P4000
Hi there,
A short note from myself regarding the tyres from Avon and Pirelli P4000:
I had old Avons on my trip to Silverstone until one blew shortly before the ferry on the way back (it was the tube). Total distance 2000km (1250 miles). I had them exchanged for Pirellis P4000 to be able to keep the wheels (6x15) and due to a recommendation from a restore advertising the better braking performance. And after investments in two cars in parallel I was also running low on money. I love the look of the original 5x15 with 185 R15 but as said I did not want to go for the full monty.
So now I have Pirelli with tubes on my car and know that I have to remove the tubes soon. But the handling is far away from the one with the AVONs. I do not have a favorite, but driving with the Pirellis always means small correction even on a straight, good road. It is somehow twitchy (if this is the right description used).
This was not the case with the AVONs. But however, they are now on the car and well, I will keep them until they are down...
Best wishes
Stefan

Hi all
Just my two cents: I have now been driving Michelins XVS 185 on standard 15 rims for five years in all kind of weather and I have had before AVon ( in honesty I must add the Avons were 205's) and what a difference.
Michelins XVS really hold well in corners and in rain! I can really recommend them ( they also look good I believe)'.
With respect to comparaison with Avon, I cannot comment too much, as I believe the main difference I experienced ( in a very positive way) was in going from 205 to 185 rather then a change in brand.
Cheers
Erik

Hello,
I am restoring a 63 FHC and want to buy new tyres but dont know which size is the correct one.Vredesteins produce a 185 70 R15 H or a 185 HR15 which is about an inch taller.I also found Fulda Y2000 185 70 R15 V for a very good price here in Slovakia.Would be very happy if you could help me with this dilemma.
Many thanks

You need the 185HR15 not the 185/70 as you will lose ride height with the latter compromising the already low ground clearance on an E-Type. With two people, luggage and a full tank of petrol you need all the under space you can get on a bumpy road or speed bumps in town.

The above might all be true be but I would rather have an E-Type that didn't handle that well than have it looking weird on stupidly thin tyres.
I have just bought two new Pirelli 205's for the front and a set of 215's for the rear and the car looks great and in my view that's what matters most!

Thanks for both your answers.I decided to go for the 185HR15 for reasons of ride height and handling.
Again many thanks

I quite like thin, she looks great and and I am sure she handles superbly.Dave K wrote:The above might all be true be but I would rather have an E-Type that didn't handle that well than have it looking weird on stupidly thin tyres.

On a serious note though Dave, what changes have you made to the suspension set-up to compensate for the different section tyres front and rear? I trust you have told your insurance company about such a fundamental change to the original specification because if not, in the event of a claim, the loss adjuster will have a field day wondering what he is going to spend his percentage bonus on!

David,
For various reasons I have not driven my car very much over the past couple of years and so not had a recent valuation. The last time I had a valuation I sent a note to the JEC with every upgrade I had done. This now doesn't include the CJ 5 speed gearbox but when the time comes to insure the car next year it will have photos and include every 'upgrade' added to the car that I have done.

Good plan. It is amazing how people are reluctant to tell their insurer about changes made to their car although in my experience it never alters the premium.
