The next person who needs to remove the steering shaft for service will be really really unhappy with you for using the locking compound. Simply cleaning the splines and fully tightening the clamp bolt would have been enough.

I read somewhere that a shim was made out of a soft drink can to wrap around any loose spline….

Seeing as I have had the car for 30years and do not plan selling it until I’m in a mobility scooter (perhaps not even then!) I don’t see using the locking compound is an issue for the next owner.
I’d spent many hours cleaning the splines and tightening the clamp up as much as I could without success.
Also, I have used the Locktight stud sealant before on other items and it is not an issue when trying to release the components.

Using locktight on threads is one thing, using it on splines is another story. See many threads about locktight in rear hub splines.

I understand that, but unlike other splined situations, the clamp section of the yolk can easily be released by carefully prising open its jaws a little - I did do a trial run and there was no problem in releasing the joint this way.
