You will probably and sensibly want to re-tune the SU's after you fit the new needles but that is really easy to do if you follow the instructions in the manual or from one of the download links in our Knowledge Base. According to Jaguar the "air silencer" (standard drum filter) reduced power by 6% but they considered this acceptable to reduce noise levels. When you fit the more free flowing ITG filter it leans out the mixture hence you need to replace the standard UM needles with UE.

David your air filter replacement suggestion looks great. There is a California distributor for these so supply seems easy in N.A. The 8.5" overall length of the assembly seems to be too short to sit on the bracket that secures the steel canister I take it. So how do you attach it to the fiberglass plenum? Is it just a force fit. Do you seal the fit with anything?

Isn't the ITG air filter the one SNGB have been selling for years? I bought one about 6 years ago. The only difference is it clamps onto the plenum.

Dave - the ITG drum filter that SNGB sell costs ?300, my version costs ?60!
Jag68 - the ITG Maxogen JC99 is about 1mm too wide to be a push fit into the plenum mouth. I used a flap wheel on an electric drill to relieve the inside of the plenum mouth slightly - does not need much so don't be aggressive. It is then a push fit and should stay in place as the filter element is so light. I did however drill two holes and put small self tapping screws to ensure it stayed there.
I notice SNGB are now selling the Mangoletsi designed ITG filter at ?200, which is the one Lee has on his car:

David. I went back and re - read the thread you started on April 28th 2012 on air filters. You did some estimating on losses from the original air cleaner. I went back and reviewed some old (from 1999) engine dyno sheets produced from testing the engine I currently have in my E Type that I autocross. On one of the runs we did a comparison of K & N pancake style filters (3) with a ram tube that was modeled after #11 ram tube in Vizzard's book - as you reproduced it in the 2012 thread. (I'd had a piece of aluminum machined as a mold and made some fiberglass reproductions of the ram tube.) The engine is mildly modified - big intake valves, mildly ported, XM2 cams (a mild grind), UO needles. We used a set of cheap and poorly made headers 6 - 1 5/8" tubes approximately 30" long- a configuration that you found wanting in an earlier thread. (We never recorded hp below 3500 rpm so I didn't see the torque dip that you experienced.) The comparison between the stock filter setup and the K&N's was interesting. All numbers following the rpm are horsepower losses: 3600rpm - 3hp, 4000 - 8, 4400 - 11, 5000 - 14, 5300 - 13. Unfortunately we had to disconnect the air flow meter on the K&N test so I'm unable to see comparative air fuel ratios. That would show, I expect, increased vacuum in the plenum from lower air flow and a richer mixure as rpm increased. I think these numbers support your (Jaguar's) 6% power loss from the stock set up - though at the upper end, given that stock engines on triple SU's made 195 - 200 true hp.

Just to say that I love your car vipergts!
The contrast between dirty/rusty and shiny mechanic is so cool.
And I'm sure few people must be surprised when you show up on their side and then disappear in front :p
You guys in UK have certainly a thing about patina.
I'm always glad to see cars like that, coming in France for exemple by the road not on a trailer.

To be fair the SNGB ITG air filter does come complete with the plenum as well so it's not just an air filter.
You get the complete unit that bolts straight on to the air intake.
I adapted mine to fit my original flat top plenum and sold the supplied plenum.

Thank You......I'm glad you appreciate it. Quite amazing how many people see through the mess and compliment me on a fine car. I'm almost certain this car sparks more compliments than a beauty...Strange but trueelgrosso wrote:Just to say that I love your car vipergts!

Take it to a show and I guarantee it will win 'peoples favourite'. We all love to see an old car that looks - well - like an old car. Has some sort of comfort factor I think where they feel it has aged much the same as they have.

#30 remote rear brake bleeders
WOW What a car, mine came out of a shed that the roof had fallen into,
there would have been water in the floor pans if they went already on shed floor. Were did you get the remote rear bleedpipes from they look great.
Best of luck with her.
Regards
Clive :D
