Marston Radiator

It was just screwed in place approximately centrally but it does not seem to have been done with care!

Thankyou David, I will forward this to Fosseway? Apparently there is a 10mm gap between the top plate and water gallery so not a problem to drill and tap (with care). I've ordered some 2ba mushroom headed slot screws from ebay...

Whilst you are emailingcan you try and convince them the Marston was used on all 3.8's and to alter their web site accordingly?

Not sure who you're addressing, but I've asked Marston for data on the total number of radiators built to the drawing number depicted on the data plate in the earlier photograph. I also asked if they have dates associated with serial numbers. If the number of radiators don't match the total number of 3.8 cars produced (with some allowance for spares), then your statement would not be correct.Heuer wrote:Whilst you are emailingcan you try and convince them the Marston was used on all 3.8's and to alter their web site accordingly?

I was addressing Richard over his communications with Fosseway and their repro radiators. Let us know what you find although I suspect there will be more radiators than cars as Jaguar still supplied Marston's as service and warranty replacements up until 1965.

Yes, I was correcting my earlier post to allow for spares while your post was in transit. In any case, if you "suspect" that the numbers will match, then you don't absolutely know for sure. Fosseway just might end up with a false statement on their web site based on speculation.Heuer wrote:Eric

I would argue they currently have a false statement on their web site based on speculation! :D

Could be. I haven't looked at their site as I have no interest in buying a very expensive reproduction and installing a reproduction data plate for the sake of "authenticity". Doesn't pass my logic test....but different strokes...
That said it seems like a pair of fake plastic Marston like end plates glued to a conventional aluminum (or brass) radiator would serve the same purpose for a lot less cost....or maybe that's what Fosseway has already done...I'll have to take a look.

I looked at the Fosseway site. I'd say that their text is incomplete, but not false in regard to applications. Also looks like they do simply glue on fake end pieces....wonder if they're plastic...Heuer wrote:I would argue they currently have a false statement on their web site based on speculation! :D

There is probably not a right and wrong regarding how each individual decides how to spend their money, but speaking personally if one wants authenticity that is one reason and secondly my reasoning also being the alloy rad seems to offer better cooling, my rad has been on the car for at least 35 years, one mantra I received from an engineer - on an old car change the cooling hoses, clamps, thermostat and radiator and one will sleep more easily!

I have just spoken to Simon at Fosseway and he will alter his web site accordingly, there appears to be some evidence (simon was saying) that some of the very last 3.8's may have had the later copper type rad fitted. (I'm sure this subject will continue to run). Also he mentioned that your photo 're marston badge position' is likely correct - so with bonnet removed and standing at the front it would read correctly.

I'm obviously one who believes that some 3.8 cars did not have the Marston unit, and I am in the process of gathering evidence to make that case. So I believe Simon is wise to be judicious in what he states on their site. Now I'm curious...are those end pieces made from plastic?

No, the side tanks are machined from aluminium to replicate the Marston 'fins' and they do aid cooling.
I do wish people who say "there is some evidence" would tell us exactly what that evidence is. The 'pro' Marston side (George Camp, JCNA, Bob Stevenson et al) has produced Jaguar documentation and photos to support the case whilst the 'anti's' seem to cite heresay. At least Eric is doing the leg work and researching a solution.

I too was dubious up until I double checked in the brown coloured spare parts book from Jaguar, my copy was reprinted in 1963. 860403 was manufactured in April 1962 and if a replacement rad was fitted after 1964 it would have been replaced with the copper type. I then found some photos of a USA car with 29k miles from new and manufactured (from memory) in May 1963, a full year after my car. This was fitted with a Marston rad and provided me with enough proof to satisfy my needs?.

I don't question that the Marston was used through '63 and likely through much of '64. I'm simply curious about the late '64 production where the change over was taking place. This might take some time, but I am building a file...

If we are going through this subject once again, what's wrong with the Welsh radiator? Works fine on mine, and half the price.

I bought a Fosseway Marston reproduction for my car around Christmas. It was expensive, but worth it IMHO. The side fins are aluminum, not plastic. I had them paint the sides black rather than bothering with it myself. It has to be done by hand. I am very satisfied with the appearance and workmanship. Too soon to comment on performance. BTW, has anyone found a source for the screws that secure the Marston tag to the radiator? I have had no luck in Canada.

It's done 1,500 miles so far without a problem and cost I think ?800 delivered and duty paid. And it took two days by FedEx. Of course, exchange rates change, but whatever, I am well satisfied.

I bought some 4ba, slot headed, mushroom headed screws in stainless steel at a recent classic car show (but believe they are available on ebay, along with a tap to create a thread. Fosseway mentioned there is approx 20mm clearance between the finished surface and causing any damage.
Not sure how many screws I purchased, will check, if I have some over you will be welcome to them.
