I am all for originality, however I have found sticking a self regulating alternator on increases reliability no end. Bypassing the regulator on an S2 is a matter of joining two adjacent wires together. Old school Ford ones from the 80's 90's fit. They are readily available branded.

One like this.

I know it fits the S2 brackets. I have never tried it on an S1, however wager it would fit a treat. I am sure Angus will know.

The last one i fitted took a matter of minutes.

What was the outcome of this saga, Andrew?

I see from Rory’s resurrection of your RB340 thread that you’ve had overcharging to the point of acid spillage since 2017. Is this the same car? The RB340 issue can be confirmed/resolved without needing a test drive.
I have not progressed Peter. To be honest, I got put off when Rory spoke about the need to fuse the circuit! Certain things I am wary about doing and burning out my wiring loom is one. I had a brand new loom go up , fortunately, only the dash extension, when a wire touched an unattached heater control cable and acted as an earth. Since when I have always fitted a 15 amp fuse in line whilst rewiring a car. That works fine if you dont have to run the engine. With setting up the RB340 I winced when it talks about joining two terminals together. I think this is best left to someone who is a qualified auto electrician. If they still exist. Since I cannot drive anywhere the problem is parked for the time being. But yes, you are correct I did have problems with an earlier battery leaking battery acid and it is the same car, so maybe the same problem, namely overcharging. It needs sorting, I just have to get myself in the mood to do this. A bit like jumping off the high board at the swimming baths.

Hold your nose and keep your legs together.

Works for the high board and for ‘Chanel-19’

Gee Whizz, literarily. Having waited for 6 months to try the 3.8 since I fitted the resistor plugs and perhaps more importantly went down a needle on the carbs , the car is transformed. So, to recap, I had two problems. The first was an annoying tendency to choke up the plugs and a misfire for no real reason even after a long drive. It was suggested that I should fit resistor plugs as I had the 123 . Well on the brief run out I have just had there was no misfire and the E ran superbly. I addition to this, I had always felt that it was over fueling. Its a pretty well worked engine, balanced, bigger inlets valves, gas flowed, Rob Beere SU cams Sports Air cleaner etc etc . When I used to floor it, all that happened was that the induction noise got louder. I suspected the mixture was just too rich and it chucked out rather a lot of black smoke. The characteristic 3.8 revvyness was not in evidence to be honest. I have gone down a needle or two and the engine is transformed. The car felt seriously quick today and the rev counter was round the dial in no time. I will check the needles before and after and add it to the post, but for now, just happy I seem to have achieved my rolling road tune by the old fashioned way! Having been driving my superb 1976 pre HE XJS for the last few days, which is a great car, I immediately knew why the E type was regarded as a sports car and the XJS as a Grand Tourer. Perhaps the XJS is as quick or quicker, but the E type gets the pulse racing alright!

Well just my two pence!
I’ve now installed 3 units from Etypes to a Mark 2
All negative earth, all three did NOT have the blue tooth advance so to make it easy.
All work Onderdul and have the Rob Beere Aires as well
All three cars are running the NGK plugs. As some have suggested
You must Retime your car
I set the advance at Number 2 as for overall reliability as anon race car
Then I reset the jets and idle screws
All three cars idle on the dime
You might have a bad spark plug wire lead
BUT if your car is still positive ground you must watch the ground and feed for low current which will throw off the unit
No ballast resistor, no old coil with internal ballast
3.0 coil with no ballast has been the best overall!
Good luck
Retime the car start at 10 btdcgtjpey13-4
