I wish to just tidy up (even though temporarily) the vinyl covering to:

1) The sides of the centre console
2) The radio/speaker frame
3) The ashtray frame
4) The inner sill covers
5) The angled/vertical panel directly behind the seats
6) The cross member in front of the seats.

as it will be a relatively simple job to remove the stained rexine/vinyl (some original/some recovered) areas to improve the appearance.

My question is whether each of the above would have had a foam backing? or whether the material was simply applied directly to the surface without foam below?

on my car ( 1963 3.8 fhc ) :
foam everywhere excep (2) ashtray frame, and (5) the angled vertical panel with "moquette" like the rear Wheel arch, not vinyl

Most interesting!

I wonder whether there was some variation by the factory? and whether it may have been altered in the different years, for my experience differs - see below….

1) The sides of the centre console - original rexine still in place and no foam backing
2) The radio/speaker frame - has been recovered at some point with vinyl and has a foam backing
3) The ashtray frame - ditto above.
4) The inner sill covers - ditto above
5) The angled/vertical panel directly behind the seats - original rexine still in place so no moquette - although Jonathan Skinner said it would have been moquette.
6) The cross member in front of the seats. Has been recovered but with no foam behind.

Hi Richard
No foam under the vinyl covering the seat cross member on my March 63 car, and it was not recovered

Thankyou jonathan, the section - angled rear bulkhead is interesting, most reference including Haddock, as lataud mentioned - states moquette.

I will for the present recover like for like as I have in the car and keep what I believe to be the 'original rexine' for future research and reference - it is a section of reasonable dimension that It seems difficult to imagine it to have come from another part of the car for example. I shall keep my eyes open for further reference!

You posted a while back about security - have you seen Tracr? (could be the one you mentioned).

Lataud

Thankyou and I notice your car (as mine) does not have the curved shape to the rear bulkhead and no arm rest on the door. My doors have two chrome strips upper (on join) and the lower one as yours….

1) The sides of the centre console - foam no
2) The radio/speaker frame - foam yes
3) The ashtray frame - foam no
4) The inner sill covers foam yes
5) The angled/vertical panel (rear bulkhead) directly behind the seats - no foam originally - possibly vinyl or moquette
6) The cross member in front of the seats - foam no
