series 1 FHC RHD project value
#1 series 1 FHC RHD project value
Due to a shortage of time and storage capacity we consider selling our 1963 s1 FHC RHD project.
Can anyone give me a clue about the value of such a car in its current state?
It has been off the road since about 1977 and in current ownership for over 35 years. all in parts atm.
It has a rebuild 3.8L engine but is non matching numbers, and has a completely new interior and all new chrome and wheels. Needs some body work to be done on the rear end, but already has new floors and sills fitted in the past.

Why not drop a line to Angus Moss (http://www.mossjaguar.com/index.html), he might be able to view and give a value? Otherwise it is a very difficult to judge without getting close to the car. With the need to properly assess its condition and what would really need doing to get it on the road.

I helped a lady sell a LHD '64 OTS a couple of years ago. It was a running vehicle, but with a 4.2 engine (triple SUs) and synchro gearbox. The boot floor had some rust as did the footwells...possibly left side sill. Incorrect smooth hub wheels. Brake booster converted to later specification. Included a detachable hard top. Otherwise straight and all there..no evidence of accident damage anywhere. Front frames looked excellent. Bonnet likewise. Paint looked decent from 5 feet away. Engine ran beautifully. Incorrect vinyl interior. She had owned the California car since 1975. I placed ads for on Jag Lovers and on this site. It sold within days for $46,000 US (she was in a hurry to sell as she was moving). It is currently undergoing a complete restoration. That was an OTS and the sale was about two years ago when prices were probably a bit stronger than today. If you are in the Netherlands, you might check with LEX as they have sold quite a number of E-types in the past. That said, I tried to get Classic Jaguar in Austin Texas to purchase this lady's car and they weren't interested as it had the incorrect 4.2 engine. FWIW...

This sold for almost £80k back in October. However it was very hyped up with a rather contrived video prior to the auction.

There is also a 4.2 FHC on Ebay at present.

Between those 2 you should be able to work out a ballpark price (if you allow for condition & non matching engine).

I paid AU$ 60k (UKP35k) for a non matching numbers 1963 FHC recently. It is complete but the body shell is bad. I expect to spend another AU$90k to restore it.
The value to a buyer of a "rebuilt" engine is limited to a degree because you never know the quality of the work unless you see it for yourself, or the car is running and you can assess it.
Again a new interior, if fitted, may not be such a big drawcard if the required body work means it needs to be removed.
Finally, a disassembled car is always worth substantially less than a complete one. Maybe 25% less for the same car in pieces.
Nevertheless, a good quality 3.8 FHC, complete with a good restoration has to be worth over UKP100k. Knowing what needs to be done, you can calculate back from that value and reach a sensible ballpark.

No offence meant but frankly surprised by this request.
Guessing that OP being involved in classics, knows where and how to explore the market for indicators and values.
Sounds rather a smart way to call for pm proposals without a formal ad.

Ah, of course. I'll offer £50, given it's problems I think that's fair.ralphr1780 wrote:No offence meant but frankly surprised by this request.

Thanks for the responses. Let me firstly make clear to ralphr1780 that this is not a cheap way to advertise the car. I do not know how you got the impression, I might have quite a close relationship with the classic car industry, but the only thing i normally do is buy cars as a hobby, this far we actually never sold one of our classics. As i do not closely follow the market for jaguars, it is hard for me to put a number on a car like this.
Secondly, the reason i asked the question is that the price range for the e-type series 1 seems to be very broad and original RHD project on the market, as mine is, scarce! I see cars for sale ranging from about £30k to over £200k. I do understand the cost of restoration etc but taking into acccount a concours restoration, i would amost need to pay someone to buy the car, as it would cost up to almost £200k for a complete concours restoration.
Thirdly, as i stated in the OP, i'm not even sure if i want to sell the car! I'm simply not in need of money, and to be honest, i'm quite attached to the car.
The reason i consider selling is that when being realistic I doubt I ever get the car back on the road in the coming 15 years or so which I think is a pitty. And with all the other cars, the pressure to get it back on the road is minimal.

Easy way to find out. Pop it on eBay starting at say £10k. Put a £30 k reserve and see what you get.... A car...any car...is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it on the day.

Hello astonman, pleased reading your comments.
As said I did not mean to offend, driven simply by common concern, but I am glad to have triggered your response.
I am active on some other non-jag forums as well, and quite recently members were warned about possible arising posts very similar to your initial one(s). A concrete case had just occurred in which two fellows were scammed at the same time for hefty sums.
Wishing you all success in your quest, and if you decide to keep the car hope to get more opportunities to interact and exchange here.
P.S.: my name is Ralph.

The thing is if I did that I would be obliged to sell in case it meets the reserve of £30k you suggest, the point however is that i'm not even sure if i want to sell the car.cactusman wrote:Easy way to find out. The outcome this far is as following:
For now I have decided to keep the car and put it in the extra storage facility I arranged. As long as it's just sitting there it doesn't really cost me anything. Besides, getting my hands on a car in the future that fits my preferences in case i sell this one is not that easy.
