#1 Factory Hard Top

Post by andrewh » Thu Nov 05, 2015 5:28 pm

I am wondering about a factory Hard Top and always recall that they can mark the paint on the rear deck which is not covered by the soft top when up or down. This was something I was told years ago and perhaps paints have improved and rubber seals may have been improved. They do look great on the car. Also, what would a Factory top be worth complete with all chrome? Thanks for looking. Andrew

Yes they mark the paintwork and I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent it. The hardtop is very heavy and only retained by two fixings at the base and three at the screen. The car body flexes against the hardtop rubber.

As regards 'worth' the originals seem to fetch about ?2,500+ providing all the chrome is present. You need to add restoration to that of course. A superb reproduction is available from CMC for ?3,600: http://cmc-parts.co.uk/shop/car-upgrade ... -hard-top/

Ah, thank you David. That's a shame about marking the paint. I wonder if it can be made less movable without detracting from the look inside? Very pretty when fitted though

Ah right. Well spotted.

Yes I have acquired another OTS, this time a one owner 66 car. It's a lovely looking set up and is very good condition. I am wondering about making it and non mint driver. . Last on the road in 2013 before the 94 year old one owner passed away

Your 3.8 seems to be a FHC or are you planning to chop the top off?

I think I owned upto the 62 3.8 some months back. Then this 66 4.2 was offered to me. Now I have a dilemma as to which to keep. I have to let one go and hence was wondering about keeping the hard top for the 3.8. The other half will go spare if she finds out. Hidden the blue car whilst she was out :D

If you want to hide a car properly then you need to get it off the great British island, get it away from mainland Europe, and hide it somewhere with deep snow for half the year, and deep fjords for the other half year.

I'll be expecting your call soon :D

Andrew

Appreciate this is a very old thread, but what a terrific find!

Out of interest what way did you go 3.8 or 4.2 OTS?
3.8 FHC Chassis no: 860403
DOM - 11th April 1962

Also

4.2 FHC Chassis no: 1E32173
