You need to choose carefully as many petrol tank sealants are not proven to be resistant to ethanol in fuel. Most claim they are but there are no long term tests to prove it. You can of course only fill up with super unleaded which is ethanol free at the moment but regular fuel can contain up to 10%. If the sealant does dissolve it will cause horrendous problems so you may want to consider just buying a new tank for £450. SNGB also sell a fully galvanised tank for about the same price.

If you want to seal rust flakes from blocking your fuel filter and getting into the carbs you would better to eliminate the rust in the tank.

Voith Industrial Services, Tamworth can chemically remove the rust back to clean metal. They have just done a couple of very rusted motorcycle fuel tanks for me and the result is impressive. Rust completely gone.

Obviously any severely rusted area will result in holes in the tank, but the tank will safe to weld after the treatment as any traces of fuel and fuel vapours will have gone.

They charge about £30 for a motorcycle tank.
