#1 Unpleasant Sound

Post by richard btype » Thu Jun 22, 2017 10:09 am

I experienced an unpleasant speed related whirring sound from what seemed to be eminating from close to the gearbox/propshaft, and could not for the life of me work out what it could possibly be - it was not a mechanical sound and all worked as it should, but with it driving me mad was about to remove the centre console - a job I did not fancy, for to gain access to the top of the gearbox, means removing the radio console, seats etc and disturbing the carpet).

Or remove the exhaust to gain access from below, however there was no obvious slack in the prop shaft UJ's so left it a while to further try and diagnose, the problem thankfully took all of 5 secs to remedy once the car was on the ramp. The handbrake cable was resting against the rear prop shaft UJ and transmitting the noise back along the propshaft! and for the moment have attached a cable tie to the rear ARB.Thankfully there is no damage to the plastic outer sleeve of the handbrake cable.

Normality and sanity have returned and one of the easiest fixes ever! but am I missing a handbrake bracket within the tunnel?

thats good. From memory there is a loop bracket welded within the tunnel which you must feed the handbrake cable through. Is there a spring to hold it as well? Cannot recall without looking at the parts book. May be muddling the spring with some other vehicle.
