I am looking for a door miror for my 63 série 1. I have found one at SNG (C16114) but i am not convinced about its screw connection, only one Bolt through the Door. I prefer the 4.2 miror but it's Not the good one ! Any advice will be very appreciated I have bought those which must be. Screwed on the chrome around the glass but they need too Much modification and avoid the glass to lift or slide down freely

I too have been pondering this matter and came across the mirrors used on the Lightweight E bought by Stratstones. This is a "clamp-on" rectangular type pitched high on the leading edge of the window frame and, in my opinion, looks great. I have bought one as a trial but couldn't get it to fit until last weekend, at the 96 Club, two Es turned up with these very mirrors (one high mounted, one low) and the secret is to cut a short length of the widow felt away to allow the inside of the clamp not to interfere with the window movement. About to do the job and will report back.

When I first got the car it was fitted with rectangular clamp on mirrors pitched high up on the window frames as you describe. I had to move them because I found it very confusing at junctions. Looking to see what traffic was coming, if there was a car behind you saw it's reflection in the door mirror and thought momentarily there was traffic coming from the side. Personally I prefer them lower mounted like modern door mirrors. I guess it all depends on line of sight.

Befor you cut the felt runner to fit the mirror try just mounting it behind the felt..it should fit ok and not be a problem for the window closing

Tried that but there is insufficient width for clamp and felt. Here is the Lightweight in question.

I have seen that Fosseway have a new E type Mirror that looks the part..

Not yet tried one myself, if anyone has actually purchaed and fitted them, I would be interested in your comments;

Here you can see that the thickness of the clamp exactly matches the thickness of the felt insert. I found it was impossible to move the window with the mirror clamp under or over the felt, it had to be removed. That said, the results were very satisfying.

For this style of mirror I did find that the near side (passenger side for RHD cars) mirror did not fit well. I had to bend the clamp to allow any kind of view of the road.



On my car (2+2) I chose to mount the mirrors a little further down the window than shown on the lightweight.



Another owner I know fitted similar frame clamped mirrors, but kept loosing them. The allen headed grub screws that clamp the mirror to the window frame bear on a plate to protect the chrome finish. This spreads the load, which reduces its effect. The screws must, therefore, be done up very tight. And then tightened some more.

At some time in the past my car has worn at least one door mirror. All that is left are the mounting holes.

I have no idea what kind of mirror this was, but I'm pretty sure it was not OEM fitting.

I've also got these mirrors and had a real problem with then falling off in the garage, thankfully not while out on the road. I also cut a section of felt out to allow the window to wind up.
The secret to making sure they stay on is to use those sticky little gel pads on the screw ends rather than the rubber strip. The pads compress and stop the screws from loosening off over time.
You can get strips of them off EBay for next to nothing.

I found the regular window clamp on mirrors kept falling off so went for Tex ones permanently bolted on the doors. However the Fosseway ones look much better and are the same as sold by another company (forget the name) which seem to have a more substantial clamp arrangement. I'd certainly have bought them if I hadn't gone the Tex route.
