Am I missing something here? My battery tray has a flange with a hole in it but there's no captive nut and hole to fix it to anything? Is this correct?

You're missing the sill end closing panel at the forward end of the sill.

Oops! You mean at the bulkhead end of the battery tray.
My Series 1 doesn't have a hole there either. If I remember correctly, the parts book doesn't quote a screw and washer for it.

And I'm sure you know this, the panel (black) that it bolts to is clamped in the wrong place.

Thanks for the replies. Okay, it sounds as though there's no fixing on the bulkhead panel so that's good. Re the black panel - no I have no idea how it's supposed to be fitted! Does anybody have a photo of that area please?

I've since been told the holes are for the battery clamping bolts. If anybody has any close up pictures of this area they could post I'd appreciate it as i'm trying to reconstruct this area without knowing what it should look like!

Paul, the battery clamp attaches higher up in a slot rather than a hole. The other side of the battery clamp attaches onto a tab spot welded to the sill end panel. Not fitted in your pic.

For the moment I only have a pic of my right hand sill end area but will take some of the left side later if non are posted sooner.



This panel is spot welded to the top edge of the sill with a small gap along the bottom edge. The two ends are welded. Be careful not to get too much heat into it as the end of the sill can distort.

Paul, the battery clamping bolts/rods attach to the other smaller hole/slot which is shown in your pic (towards the sill), you should have one slot on each side. I far from my car now to take a pic, but if still unclear to you I will take one for you tomorrow.

I also forgot to mention that the Robey sills don't have the correct radius or curvature which makes this area even harder to line up correctly.

You will need a LOT more clamps and more importantly a lot of patience.
I know unfortunately you have already bought your sills but the ones Hutsons make are a much better fit.

I can't stress enough how important it is to get everything lined up properly before you start welding away.

The sill fitment has knock on implications for doors, wings etc. Check and check again.

Sorry, please ignore my earlier post , just came back to memory that the clamping rods hold to small brackets which are fixed on both sides above the tray, will take a pic tomorrow if none shows up by then.
