Hi all

I am trying to remove yet another small part of the car without much joy. This time I have an issue with a 1/2" hex bolt that holds the alternator and the alternator adjusting link together. The bolt pictured below didn't have a nut on which I thought was strange and just will not shift. Any suggestions on how to remove and is it possible that it's been welded to the adjusting link?

Put a spanner on it and rotate anti clockwise?

Believe it or not that was my first choice option :). It's not budging and was worried about shearing the bolt. Any other suggestions?

Hi Trevor...it should just unscrew....but you could remove the bolt at the other end of the link and take out the alternator and link together...then work on the tight bolt on the bench.... Steve

It's a coarse threaded bolt. It screws into the aluminium front plate of the alternator. So there shouldn't be any tricks to it.

The judicious use of heat from a propane torch may help you.

Thanks guys, I didn't think it would be anything special it's another old stubborn part I guess. If I remove the alternator with bracket to work on my bench should I disconnect the battery? Not removed an Alternator before

I always do but wanted to double check. The alternator wiring isn't mounted how I like it also so gives me a chance to tidy up that while the alternator is out. Another job for the list :)

Good news, the bolt finally came out. Not sure if it was cross threaded or what but I nearly broke my knuckles when the bolt finally gave it and loosened as I hit the cylinder head. Ouch, but it wouldn't be classic car ownership without some blood, sweat and tears from time to time.
