#1 Gear knob thread size

Hi all

Since I bought my car it's always had an old battered gear knob which looks like it was once an original gear knob and the rubber coating has worn away. I've always liked it for it's honest patina and felt it went well with the car but as I am am going through the car and making sure everything is factory correct I've bought a replacement gear knob and the collar which also wasn't present.

However after removing the gear knob I noticed that the thread on the gear lever is a right mess and neither the collar or new gear knob will screw on. Can someone tell me what the thread size is for the gear lever/knob and do you think if I use a die on it to re-cut the thread it will work?

Thanks

Hi Trev,
I had a similar problem with my 62 FHC where it looked like someone had put multigrips around the shaft at some stage and ruined the plating - these are available from Barratts for GBP24.50 under part no C4054 and the quality is very good - up to OEM specification. Only thing is looking at the Barratts website the application appears only to be for Moss gearboxes so if yours is later maybe an enquiry to Barratts would pay dividends.
I tend to generally prefer to restore rather than replace but in this case having a shiny new gearlever stick improves the look of the interior no end.

Another option: Cut the lever about 1 inch and re-thread. I didn't have the thread problem but a knowledgeable person suggested that to me. It gives the gearbox a really nice short throw through the gears.

Both good suggestions, I already looked at replacing the lever but not sure how easy they are to fit?

Would someone be able to give me lever thread size though as it makes sense to try and save the one I have before buying a new one

Hi TrevS

No one seems to want to tell you the thread size but I will - it's 5/16 UNC.

Perfect thanks, I'll have a look at getting a die to recut the thread

Hi Trever.....havnt used it but there are good reports on JB weld and that threads can be cut in it....so possibly build up the damaged lever thread and recut.....sure there will be lots on youtube about it.. Steve
