#1 Cylinder Head Repair

Post by baldyz1 » Mon Oct 09, 2017 8:55 am

Hi,

I have a 66 Series 1 4.2 engine where the cylinder head has some detonation pitting around the valve seat area of cylinder 1. The engine builder suggests a new head but I don't want to lose the number or alternatively welding / weld filling which he says he would not recommend on a stressed engine but mine will not be raced etc...

Firstly will welding be effective long term and secondly does anyone know a true specialist for this in the South East?

Thanks

You could try CMES in Bracknell http://cmesuk.com/ they did a weld on a head for me.
And I believe quite a few people on here have used them for engine overhaul.

I have never heard of "detonation pitting" . It doesn't mean it could not happen, but a far more usual consequence of prolonged detonation is burning of the piston crown. ( 2.8 XJ6s were very prone to this ) . If there is pitting, it could be the result of the spark plug tip being burned off and becoming a foreign object

2019 update - having "experienced" the services of the people I recommanded when I wrote this post, I'm revising my judgement and would no longer advise using them under any circumstances.
