Can anyone advise of a set of Halogen headlights that fit the s1 e type bowls without modification? I have an old set of Hella units but they are too deep to fit unfortunately.

Thanks

The wipac quadoptic 7 inch ones fit. Use a 60/55watt H4 bulb. Widely available.

You could also fit one of the Lucas PL700 replicas which come with H4 halogen bulbs. I managed to source a NOS pair of Right Hand drive ones via Ebay (the normal suppliers were out of stock at the time). The PL700 were the lamps originally fitted to British RHD S1 3.8s. They look very good behind the glass bonnet covers and I had no problem fitting them into the existing bowls.

I got repro PL700's from svc for mine but right now I can't find a UK supplier of rhd units so i suggested the wipac ones. If you can get repro pl700 they look good and work just fine. Original pl700's go for silly money....

The repro PL700's look good but their optical quality is dismal so more for show than go. The only other headlamp bowls that will fit the S1's slanted bowls are the Wipac ones. They are optically good and if you fit the latest generation Osram or Ring Halogen bulbs the lights are acceptable. If you want to get them up to modern day standards you need to add relay's and all the details of the modification are here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4919

The relay upgrade is well worth doing if you want to drive your E-Type at night, an experience every owner should savour! Incredibly exciting looking down that bonnet in the dark.
