#1 Koni dilemma

Post by Philk » Sat Feb 17, 2018 10:54 am

We're just completing a comprehensive mechanical restoration on the car and I've been going through some of the parts that have been taken off and replaced. For the front shock absorbers, we have fitted a pair of new Boge shock absorbers and had them painted RAF Blue Grey (thank you David for that earlier post with the paint colour).

The shock-absorbers that came off the car were painted red (a later repaint) but, having now cleaned them up, I can see they are Koni 82-1232 units that have a date code of Jan 1967. These are not period to my car (which is three years older) and have obviously been fitted at some point during the car's life in America (possibly when the car was restored in 1985).

I'm now somewhat torn as to whether to pay to get these refurbished and put back on the car (and then sell the painted Boge units) or simply to sell them as they are. I'm not sure whether it is better to have refurbished 1967 Koni shock absorbers on the car or brand new units that are very close to the Girling originals in look and colour (I have attached a picture of how the car is currently looking). We have attempted to keep it looking stock as possible with appropriate road-use upgrades (e.g. Coopercraft brakes). Hence my dilemma on the shock-absorbers.

Views and thoughts most welcome!

Personally I would sell the Koni's. They are adjustable to compensate for wear not really for stiffening up the suspension. I had three Koni's fail on me after about 15,000 miles and went over to Boge which, IMHO, are better suited to the E-Type suspension and my car is a delight to drive.

Hi David

Many thanks - exactly the type of advice I was after. They will be consigned to ebay!

Best Regards

+ 1

I fitted Boge from SNGB all round the car and have never regretted it.

Oh dear, should mine be blue-grey too ?

Me too. Boge all around, although I'm not sure I have the correct length ones on the front.

I won't bother re-painting them.
