#1 Front suspension torsion bars

I am undertaking a ground-up restoration on a Series I 2 + 2. The car has a recorded 90,00 miles on the odometer. My question is, do the front suspension torsion bars have a recommended "life", or should they be replaced as a matter of course......? All advice welcomed

Hi Norman,
The bars themselves are fine. The only reasons to replace them are if the car has been in a front end accident, if they are heavily corroded or if you want to go racing. If you want to change the ride height, you'll need to change the preload on the bars, not the bars themselves.

Thanks for that reassurance....mind at rest now! Had thought about replacing on account of age only....They are undamaged and rust-free, so will refit.....Thanks for your help.....

they are 'handed' so have to go back on the correct side; they are stamped on one end. Just in case you didn't know.

Thanks for that, I didn't know they were handed, well noted. Apologies for the inordinate delay in response, but I have been out of Oz briefly....I hope to commence dismantling the front suspension shortly, so no doubt there will be some more queries as we go.....!

Why are they handed do you know......different strength?

They are handed because they deal with bump and rebound which are dynamically quite different, and are set metallurigically to be stiffer IIRC on bump than on rebound. If you put them on the wrong side they will sag in no time at all
