#1 Bonnet balance link assy. bolts

Post by david muir » Wed Nov 06, 2019 7:46 pm

Hi,
What size are the 'swivel' bolts for the balance link (not the special shouldered ones)? Mine are 1/4" UNF but there appears to be lots of 'slop'. Sizes are not specified in parts book.
Thanks

If you mean the bolts that fix the links to the bonnet then mine are 1/4 unf with special oversized washers

Series 1 2+2 when the kids were small now sold.

no, I mean the bolts on which the spring assy 'pivots' i.e. as the bonnet opens the mechanism opens pivotting round these bolts.

Originally these were held together with rivets and special brass washers.

Not uncommonly the rivets failed or someone pulled them apart to restore them, and were replaced with bolts.

Andrew,
Yes, on my 63 FHC I had one side with the rivet and the other with a machine screw/nut/washer.

1/4" UNF bolts removed. Holes are 5/16". 'Special' shouldered bolt and brass washers fitted to picture frame swivel and 5/16" bolts and brass washers fitted to other two, originally rivetted ,holes. No slop now!
